Iโ€™m pretty sure this will be an unpopular opinion on here as this is just a customers opinion.

DoorDash has gone down hill in the last year or so, it used to be worth it! They tack on all most $10 in additional fees, suggest outrageous tips, and general I still wait over an hour to get food that is always within 5 miles.

I see a lot of concern over tips from the customer and while I do believe in tipping an appropriate amount, I donโ€™t believe itโ€™s the customerโ€™s responsibility to make up for DoorDashs lack of pay. I would never tip a pizza delivery driver over $20, I would never tip a waiter/waitress 35% of my total order, so why should I be expected to do the same for doordash? Agree or disagree, at the end of the day those 2 jobs have much more responsibility and duties than a dasher and get paid less.

I know Iโ€™m generalizing and this doesnโ€™t apply to all dashers. But I get the impression than many of them feel they should be making $30+ an hourโ€ฆ.for food delivery. If that were the case then everyone would be doing it!

EDIT:

Wowโ€ฆ.there ARE a lot of opinions here, never did I imagine my salty morning rant would gain so much attention. I guess Iโ€™ll just follow up and give my final thoughts:

  1. Yes, DoorDash does in fact take advantage of their driversโ€ฆno one is doubting this. But it shouldnโ€™t be the customer responsibility to pick up the slack. This can be applied to a wide range of jobs, and fair wages should be something we continue to aim for as a country (however I do understand as wages rise, so will the cost of goods and services #economics). Think about our teachers, first responders, etc. all who bring unique and highly valuable skills to our workforceโ€ฆ.I can assure you many of these individuals do not make $30 an hour. โ€œWeโ€™ll thatโ€™s their choiceโ€ฆโ€ โ€œthey donโ€™t have to pay for, X,y,Zโ€. And I agree, itโ€™s their choice, just like itโ€™s your choice to choose DoorDash for employment, and my choice not to use it anymore!

  2. Yes, deleting and not using the app is the best practice for someone who thinks as I do. Honestly I used it sparingly and was shocked when I came back to it after several weeks. I am, in fact, not too lazy to pick up my own food. Contrary to popular belief, I am not in fact lazy, but a new father who would PREFER not to leave the house unless I need to, but donโ€™t mind doing so to save what seems like $20 minimum.

  3. Lastly, I saw another person recently post about the cost of wear and tear, repairs, gas, etc. I have worked another job that required travel, I feel I do have a good grasp on a reasonable cost of travel. I will say I do agree that $10+ an hour is extremely high valuation for gas/wear and tear. Iโ€™m willing to assume that many dashers havenโ€™t had a job where they are reimbursed for their travel in a POV, but ~.40-.60 cents per mile is what Iโ€™ve seen. The idea that a customer should tip $2+ per mile is ludicrous, and the company should pay something to the dashers IMO. Again tho, not the customer. (This does not include a tip Iโ€™ll add)

My SO and I order door dash maybe 2-3 times a month. Sometimes more if we are too lazy to go out and get coffee in the morning.

Our profile clearly says leave at door. Sometimes we do get the occasional person to knock and weโ€™ll just talk through the door. Set it down please. They do and walk away.

Today we had a dasher named โ€œSandraโ€ the order was supposed to be delivered around 4 pm. I understand traffic and all so when it was delayed we just thought whatever except the person started back tracking towards to the store.

Finally we get the message that the dasher arrived and they knock on our door. I look out the window and itโ€™s clearly a male. Obviously not a Sandra. Heโ€™s knocking saying doordash. My SO goes to the door and says set it down. He says door dash!!! He says put it on the ground. This guy starts to try and open our front door! Being persistent. Door dash!!! After about a minute of this he stands there in silence for a little then set the cups down on the ground. We receive the picture notification and see heโ€™s walking to his car. We wait to open the door but I open the notification and it was 3 hot coffees. We ordered no drinks but two lunch hoagies. And received no food at all. We look back out the window and the guy is STILL sitting outside our house in his car for about an additional 5 minutes.

Iโ€™m honestly so freaked out over what happened. He was like trying to get into the house. I reported the food issue because I spent $40 including tip for not my food but I was so scared to do that bc this guy has my address and we donโ€™t even know who he really is because itโ€™s clearly not his account.
