People are not appreciating the leadership qualities he brings. JWP would be a great acquisition and would help fill the void in this department that Declan left, he would be a great professional for the club on and off the field. These kind of characters are massively important for clubs and people constantly underestimate the importance of these types of people - great for morale, and a role model for youngsters coming through the ranks. Shares a lot of the same qualities from that side as Noble did, and without Rice now I do think we are lacking these kinds of individuals. Look what happened when noble stopped playing, the same thing will happen when Rice leaves.

From a playing perspective, he’s a good proven/consistent PL player. Available all season, does the dirty work, technically very good, and it goes without saying how many goal contributions he could potentially have with his set pieces.

We look set on a sit back Midfielder (now potentially talks with Alvarez), JWP in a pivot next to someone like him, will give him a bit more freedom to pick a pass, and we know he’s happy to put that work in.

If we can get him for £20-30million, I personally would snap him up any day of the week.

Mexico fan here to give some insight on a player like Edson Alvarez

West ham fans, please note that edsons passing abilities are not as bad as people make it seem. You guys probably think he can’t pass to save his life.

He’s not Fernandinho for sure, but it doesn’t mean he can’t play with the ball at his feet at all or he can never send a decent long ball. Edson has just been held to an unreasonable standard by some Mexico and Ajax fans becuz they want him to be everything, but he’s really just a true cdm who can defend at an elite level and who can pass somewhat.

In premier league games, his defense will be maximized and his passing can even be useful. Vs weaker opposition, where west ham will most likely dominate possession, is when his passing becomes almost useless becuz he really create much when teams are very defensive. Which is why in a concacaf tournament where only like 2 teams can compete with Mexico, and Mexico won’t even play neither of those teams, he has been a little less useful.

In games where u are dominating, Edsons role kind of just becomes a little obsolete becuz he’s not an elite passer who can perfectly place through balls to beat teams who everyone dropped back to defend. His defense just kind of goes to waste at that point as well. So for a teams like Ajax and Mexico, who routinely plays weaker opposition, there has been a lot of negativity in regards to Edson passing abilities. But look at the games when Mexico and Ajax are playing good teams… that’s the player u are buying for 30/40 mil
