To be clear: I am not talking about AI generated prog (hell no). Rather, I hypothesize that music that is more easily generated by AI due to predictability (modern pop) might lead to a shift in attention to styles of music that are much harder to replicate by AI, such as prog (because it requires more human skill, creativity and genuine human touch). It is a highly hypothetical scenario of course.

I have been thinking lately about the impact of generative AI in music creation and its possible impact on the musical landscape. We've already seen AI's ability to generate images and the impact it has on digital artistry. Contemporary pop music often follows a relatively predictable structure and in recent years, pop music sounds more and more homogeneous, at least in my opinion. AI algorithms may be able to learn and mimic these predictable patterns, leading to a potential oversaturation of AI-produced pop music in the future. It might not be long before one can generate a simple pop song with the click of a button that just blends in with all the rest.

But here's an interesting thought. As AI becomes more prevalent, and mainstream music potentially more homogenized, could we see a resurgence in more complex, avant-garde genres like progressive rock?

Progressive rock is characterized by its complexity and unpredictability. It often incorporates irregular time signatures, varied song structures, diverse lyrical themes, and a wide range of instruments and sounds. As such, it might be more challenging for an AI to convincingly generate a good progressive music piece than a typical pop song.

Therefore, if the market becomes flooded with AI-generated pop music, will listeners start seeking out music with more complexity and uniqueness? Could this lead to a renaissance of genres like progressive rock, which flourished in the 70s and offered an ambitious and intricate alternative to mainstream rock?

Moreover, could this potential shift also encourage musicians to explore and innovate in these more complex genres, to stand out from AI-generated music and offer something uniquely human and creative? AI could also be used as a tool to innovate and create a whole new type of sound.

Of course it is all just hypothetical and it may not happen at all. Not in the least case because music probably does not play as much of an important role in people's lifes now as it did in the 70s with all the alternatives available now. but I found it an interesting thought. I'm curious to hear your thoughts on this.
