Alternative Title: Negotiate Online before Visiting a Dealership How do you get the best deal when purchasing a car? This is the "tactic" my dad always uses and I've used myself with great results. I expect some of you might disagree or better yet, offer your own method. So let's start a discussion!

First thing is to do some research and come up with a price that you are willing to pay for the car. You are looking to get a good deal, but need to set realistic expectations. Also if you are in a big hurry to buy a car this might not be the way for you.

OK so to start, email every dealership within driving range that can get, or has the car you want. Briefly explain that you are ready to purchase the vehicle for X amount out-the-door. ALWAYS, ALWAYS speak in out-the-door terms. A lot of times what seems like a good deal can turn into another 20k after fees. If you are trading in a vehicle also state what you are expecting to get for it.

The first thing every dealership will try to do is to try to get you to come in and test drive the car. DON'T! There are few psychological reason they do that which I won't get into, but your reply should look something like this.

"Mr Smith Thank you for your prompt reply. I don't need to drive the car at this point, but please do advise if we will be able to move forward with a deal. Like I mentioned on my original email I am ready to buy the vehicle if we can stay within MSRP out-the-door.

Given the current market I understand if we can't settle at this price right now, but please do keep me in mind if you can offer me this deal down the line. I am ready to buy immediately"

Eventually you will be contacted. Once you have an offer in writing then feel free to test drive the car at that point.

The most important thing to remember is that you never even visit the dealership until some sort of deal had been reached. I personally, don't even like taking to them on the phone so I insist on email or text as "reception at my workplace is spotty".

Let me know if this helps, or if you have another approach.
