Bitcoin is the currency of the Internet: a distributed, worldwide, decentralized digital money. Unlike traditional currencies such as dollars, bitcoins are issued and managed without any central authority whatsoever: there is no government, company, or bank in charge of Bitcoin. As such, it is more resistant to wild inflation and corrupt banks. With Bitcoin, you can be your own bank.

Bitcoin did a 2x since the lows in 2022 and Ethereum did a 2.4x. The total market cap did a 1.73x. Not only did we bounce hard since 2022, there's a lot of bullish narratives brewing. In short, as you know, there's a ton of institutional interest, as evidenced by new exchanges and ETF applications led by massive institutions.

Yet retail interest is so low that I would argue that retail is nowhere to be found. The bear market and all the media narratives scared most retail off.

(1) Searches for crypto are incredibly low

Searches for Bitcoin are very scarce:

Bitcoin searches

Searches for Ethereum are also very rare:

Ethereum searches

These are search levels not seen since before our last major bull run (highlighted period):

https://i.redd.it/5fy0rszdblbb1.png

Retail interest only appeared after massive green candles. This explains why so many of us -me included- started in 2020 and likely even 2021. A lot of retail got sucked in the market then that served as exit liquidity. Such is tradition.

(2) This subreddit is incredibly inactive now - we lost 89% activity in 2 years!

This place is very slow, especially on weekends. Between July 1 and July 11 in 2023, we averaged 1500 comments per daily discussion post. For comparison, a year ago during the same time, we had 2500 comments per daily. A year before that, it was 13700 per day!

https://i.redd.it/g300pm9pclbb1.png

So in two years, the percentage decrease in activity in the daily is 89%! Reddit says that we have 6.5 million members and that 5k people are online right now, but this place is a serious ghost town.

Concluding remarks

Although this bear market is tough, it is truly a blessing that we get to accumulate while most retail has left. Retail interest is obviously incredibly low. We are now accumulating alongside of the institutions. Hype will return at some point thereby drawing in the retail crowd and this will be evidenced by searches for Bitcoin and Ethereum as well as more activity here. Then we need to be ready to take profits and be the one doing the dumping (for a change).

I have a lot of hope for games with blockchains involved, but we need web 3 gaming to have the blockchain abstracted away from the gaming experience. NFT’s and a creative way of doing an in-game currency, is highly necessary in the blockchain gaming space.

I don’t want to buy an NFT in a marketplace, to participate. I want to grind the game and earn real world value through NFT’s that I earn from my time spent/skill level. Not by buying an NFT to even play the game, and then saying I’m playing to earn by earning an inflated away currency.

The game should be free to play, and only include transactions, when I claim my reward for a task, quest or something of that sort. Simply put, current blockchain games don’t abstract the blockchain out enough. We need games that include minimal blockchain, in my opinion.

What’s in it for the game Dev’s? Royalties on NFT trades, just like all other NFT devs are incentivized with. They could release special release NFTs, that people can pay for if they’d like. They could monetize their own portion of the map, where you need something special, to play in “their area”, which is essentially pay to play in their area. I mentioned a token in the post, they could absolutely create a token, or some other form of value added that can be derived to them, but the point is, the entire game should not only derive value to them. They should find innovative ways to take some value in micro transactions or other ways that add some value, but don’t take away from the usability.

NFT’s should be the earnable item, not a token or at least not solely a token. People like to earn usable items in a game, as opposed to “money”. The monitart value can be a nice additive, but make the earned items fun and have utility, if it has those properties, the value can come later.

Lastly, a token or multiple can exist, but they should serve a purpose, and not be a catch all token of money to be inflated away as well as the security token and governance token. The currency of blockchain games are the worst part of a game usually, because it’s never well thought out or is a catch all token, doomed to never actually serve a purpose, and therefore ends up losing a lot of value. I hope we can make these games more creative, and really add the blockchain element, in a more creative way that truly adds to the experience.

Do you have anything in particular you’d like to see in gaming, that blockchain actually helps or would add value too?

Online trading card games could definitely benefit, as could winnable skins for characters. I’m curious to hear what others think blockchain could add to the gaming industry.
