ABBA isn't given the credit they really deserve. To have a legacy defined by their pop hits and a crummy musical infuriates me.

ABBA are a well-regarded pop group, sure. I am not arguing that they need more recognition for their music, but the image of a middle-aged woman, wearing boob tube, mini skirt, drunk on the lambrini, shouting the words to Dancing Queen at 1 am in the morning, much to the chagrin of the neighbours, actually makes me feel bad for ABBA.

Not least because their last album, The Visitors, is one of the best albums ever made. Not the best album ever made (I will write about that soon enough), but certainly up there. The Visitors contained the group's last number one hit, One of Us, but also featured some of the group's more musically mature and complex numbers. It is simply a fantastic album.

Unfortunately, no one ever really listens to it. And that makes me mad. Dancing Queen, Waterloo, et al. may be good songs, but they are not great songs.

TIL: The track "Funky Feet" was written for the album Arrival in 1976, but was discarded for sounding too much like "Dancing Queen". It was later recorded by the ABBA-tribute band Arrival.

With ABBA announcing that they're releasing their first new music in 35 years, let's talk about the importance of ABBA to modern day pop music.

Wrote a post last year for my blog that questioned why ABBA has gotten so much hate over the years, here. https://hotonehundo.com/2017/06/09/in-defense-of-abba/

Tl;dr - ABBA's mastery of pop progressions, melody, and harmony turned once disposable pop music into an art form in it of itself. Their influence on modern day pop artists is understated, but without these four swedes, pop music as we know it may not exist today.

Edit: I also wrote an album review on the compilation, ABBA: Gold, which has sold 30+ million copies since its release in 1992. It's a great place to start, and I'd highly recommend it to anyone out there unfamiliar with the band. https://hotonehundo.com/2018/04/27/review-abba-gold/

I doubt we’ll get another album after Voyage and I feel bad and greedy just for asking about it as ABBA fans have been so blessed. But 2 questions: do you think another album is possible? And if not another album, maybe a release of songs recorded during the Voyage sessions, or something like that?
