There might be somebody even older than my pick, but I think Angus MacAskill who was born in 1825 could make an NBA roster with proper training (the guy to the right of the Angus figure is 6' 8"). At 7' 9" and approximately 500 pounds, he's the largest giant in history that didn't suffer from any known pathological issues (dude was just big). Because he didn't have any medical problems, he became a well known strongman of his era. There wasn't exactly supper accurate documentation of his feats (most of this happened in the mid-1800s), but he was alleged to be able to do the following:

Lift a 2,800 pound ship's anchor to his chest

Hold 250 pounds with only three fingers

Carry barrels weighing over 350 pounds apiece under each arm

Lift 112 pounds with two fingers and hold it at arm's length for ten minutes

Single-handedly set a 40-foot mast into a schooner

Lift a fully grown horse over a four-foot fence

He also had huge hands at 8 inches across and 12 inches long

I can't say for certain he'd have the cardio to keep up with NBA players for extended stretches, but if he just had the athleticism of an average male, I think he could make an NBA roster at his size. He'd be 3 inches taller than Yao Ming and significantly bigger. You'd be hard pressed to find anyone his size that didn't have debilitating medical problems, let alone someone that was by all accounts in great physical condition.
