Edit: I don't see how "it's not like the source material" is ever a valid reason why something is good or bad. Why you didn't like it, sure. But we a critique, no. Game of thrones is nothing like the books at all. Not in story, not in tone, not in designs, nothing. The boys, is nothin like the source material at all. Both are often better for it. You know what the difference is? The difference is no one read those two things or knew what they were. So they didn't care about the changes, cause they didn't even realize there were any. So they could judge the shows as is, purely on their own merit. People are not remotely consistent on when it's okay to change a story and when it isnt.

I don't think people, if they played the original halo triolgy today, would think those stories are good. If it was their first time.

It was sick for the time. But it was very very much so a video game story from the early 2000s. No one was looking at video games as a way to tell HBO quality stories. So they most certainly did nothing wrong when making those games.

But that is the difference between adapting the last of us, and adapting halo, is absolutely so far apart it's not even funny. 1 to 1, live action halo, would be bad. And everyone who isn't a super fan, would also think it was had.

I can't think of many characters, but the arbitar, that has the depth or nuance of any of the main cast in the last of us within the games themselves. They are often straight up caricatured. Like sergeant Johnson. I love those characters, but there's just not much there.

The last of us, was already trying to be an HBO quality story within the game itself. I wasnt the biggest fan cause I had just played the games, and it's often 1 to 1. But it is good, it's well done.

As far as chief taking off his helmet, I find it absolutely insane to even imply that he shouldn't have. People mention Mando as if chief has some sort of in universe reason for not taking his helmet off. He absolutely takes it off, all the time. In the games it's bacially just tradition now, when originally it was specifically done by Bungie so that chief wouldn't actually be a character. Just vehicle for the player. That changed, but the helmet remained. But they've teased it several times, and we know what he looks like. Mando, has a religion that doesn't allow him to. But when he does, the show is better. That's the only time we get much nuance from the character. But Pedro physically isn't there half the time so it's not even being done anymore for story. All the other mandos do.

He takes it off in the comics, we see him multiple times as a kid, we see his eyeballs and half his face in game. We know he's a pretty normal looking white guy with brown hair and blue eyes.

So I still don't see why people wanted a silent, faceless, emotionless, main character... Do you have to avoid every single scene inside the ships?? Can he never eat dinner? Can he never be seen sleeping? Can he never been seen just chilling with his team? It'd be so insanely limiting for everyone involved. Actors, writers, directors, everyone.

It'd be awkward and weird if chief in complete silence was the only dude keeping it on while all his buddies are sitting around eating. It'd be a COMEDY if they did that lol. It'd be so goofy
