Fron the article before draft day

According to a source associated with Metropolitans 92, Wembanyama’s French team, the 7-foot-5 center recently had a meeting with the Spurs to discuss his vision for how he wants his first year in the NBA to play out. The most notable request from Wembanyama was that he wants to play in every possible game. The source told me the Spurs responded by telling Wembanyama that the franchise agrees with his vision and will do everything they can to make that happen.

Shortly after San Antonio won the lottery, I wrote that I thought the Spurs should use his rookie season to slowly but surely build his endurance. I envisioned the Spurs sitting Wembanyama in back-to-back situations when it made sense to try to keep him healthy. However, it sounds like Wembanyama isn’t interested in a slow approach.

The source explained that Wembanyama was very proud of the fact he didn’t miss a game this season. If he wants to keep his ironman streak alive in his rookie season, it sounds like the Spurs won’t get in his way.

Credit to Sports Illustrated, many “fast facts” taken nearly verbatim

WHICH TEAM WILL WIN THIS YEAR'S NBA TITLE?

Lakers 65%

Celtics 16%

Cavaliers 5%

Magic 3%

Spurs 3%

FAST FACTS: Each of the top-five vote-getting teams has played in at least one NBA Finals since '07; the Lakers, with Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol, have been to two.... The Nuggets, currently second in the West, received a single vote.... West is best: Only 28% of the voters believed a team from the East such as the Celtics (with '08 Finals MVP Paul Pierce) could win it all.

WHICH TEAM IS LEAST LIKELY TO WIN A TITLE IN THE NEXT FIVE YEARS?

New Jersey Nets 31%

Minnesota Timberwolves 16%

Memphis Grizzlies 15%

New York Knicks 11%

Los Angeles Clippers 5%

Charlotte Bobcats 5%

FAST FACTS: As of Monday the 7--55 Nets were threatening to match the futility of the alltime losingest team, the 76ers of 1972--73, who went 9--73.... Silver lining? The Pacers (20--43) received only one vote—the same as the league-leading Cavaliers (49--15).... Perception is that the decade's losingest team, the Hawks (313--485), could fly high; Atlanta got a mere two votes.

WHO DO YOU WANT ON THE LINE AT THE END OF A GAME?

Steve Nash, Suns G 33.9%

Kobe Bryant, Lakers G 23.4%

Chauncey Billups, Nuggets G 15.2%

Ray Allen, Celtics G 10.5%

José Calderon, Raptors G 7.0%

FAST FACTS: Bryant's reputation as a cold-blooded buzzer beater—he has three so far this year—may have influenced voters; his 84.8% free throw shooting in '09 ranks just 14th in the NBA.... Conversely, Manu Ginobili, who ranks fourth in free throw percentage this year (89.6%) received zero votes.... Only two non-guards, the Mavericks' Dirk Nowitzki and the Hornets' Peja Stojakovic, received more than one vote.

WHO DO YOU LEAST WANT ON THE LINE AT GAME'S END

Shaquille O'Neal, Cavs C 48%

Ben Wallace, Pistons C 19%

Chuck Hayes, Rockets C-F 9%

Dwight Howard, Magic C 7%

Rajon Rondo, Celtics C 4%

FAST FACTS: Among those with at least 1,200 free throws made, only Wilt Chamberlain (.511) has a worse career percentage than Shaq's .527... Howard, who at this year's All-Star Game set a Guinness world record for sinking the longest shot while seated, might consider bringing a chair to the charity stripe: He's ninth worst alltime (.602)... Rondo (.590 this season) was the only guard to receive more than one vote.

WHO IS THE NBA'S BIGGEST TRASH TALKER?

Kevin Garnett, Celtics F 62%

Kobe Bryant, Lakers G 7%

Rasheed Wallace, Celtics F/C 5%

Paul Pierce, Celtics F 3%

Nate Robinson, Knicks G 3%

FAST FACTS: Garnett's landslide victory belies the relative politeness of his play. Over the past five seasons 81 starters, including 37 other forwards, have more personal fouls than KG.... Of those receiving votes, only Suns forward Amar'e Stoudemire (1.4%) and Bulls forward-center Joakim Noah (0.7%) are among this season's top 25 in personal fouls.... Suspended Wizards guard Gilbert Arenas received two votes.

WHO IS THE NBA'S MOST UNDERRATED PLAYER?

Joe Johnson, Hawks G 9%

John Salmons, Bulls G 6%

Lamar Odom, Lakers F 4%

Gerald Wallace, Bobcats F 4%

David Lee, Knicks C 3%

FAST FACTS: Johnson may be a short-timer on this list, given his 21.2-point average for on-the-rise Atlanta.... Wallace also may be playing his way off, having elevated his rebounding average from 7.8 in 2008--09 to 11.5 this season.... Four '09 All-Stars besides Johnson received votes: Raptors forward Chris Bosh, Lakers forward-center Pau Gasol, Hornets forward David West and Cavs forward LeBron James.

WHO IS THE NBA'S MOST OVERRATED PLAYER?

Tracy McGrady, Rockets G/F 9%

Danny Granger, Pacers F 4%

LaMarcus Aldridge, Trail Blazers F 3%

Andre Iguodala, Sixers G/F 3%

LeBron James, Cavaliers F 3%

Shaquille O'Neal, Cavaliers C 3%

David West, Hornets F 3%

Gilbert Arenas, Wizards G 3% (suspended)

FAST FACTS: At week's end the oft-injured McGrady was rumored to be leaving Houston in a deal with the Knicks involving, among others, forward Al Harrington, who received one vote… Five 2010 All-Stars received more than one vote each: James, Celtics forwards Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce, Heat guard Dwyane Wade and Bobcats forward Gerald Wallace.

For those wondering, there has been an unconnected series of various draft busts/unfortunate events that have occurred to the 2nd overall pick's chosen player that have created this perception that the 2nd overall pick is "cursed". As a point of reference, let's take a look at the last 10 years of 2nd overall picks in the 1st round of the NBA Draft:

2022: Chet Holmgrem - TBD but getting injured in the Summer League and missing out on an entire season? Coming into the league with Wembanyama who will be playing the same year as you and will be trying to win ROTY? That is isn't "The Flash" levels of cursed but it's pretty unfortunate despite being paid the millions Chet did during said inaugural non-season.

2021: Jalen Green - TBD, Jalen Green's inefficiency has been well noted and often joked about but he's still one of the youngest players of this class and the Rockets in general haven't been great at developing their talent of late anyway. He probably deserves to be cursed to be inefficient after the cringe-worthy Dunk Contest performance where he was more interested in promoting NFTs than actually dunking, however.

2020: James Wiseman - Chosen over LaMelo Ball despite injury ending his college career and only playing 3 games in college though this one is somewhat excusable given the CV-19 pandemic kind of screwed up scouting in general for this draft class. Doesn't make his lack of success any less fortunate though like fellow 2nd overall pick Darko, which is weird to say about an NBA champion because he does technically have a championship ring. He's young enough to where it's tempting to say TBD but with the context of who came after him coupled with the general battle with injuries and poor play when healthy, it's hard to see Wiseman having a major bounceback.

2019: Ja Morant - A bonafide superstar whose off-court antics are threatening to derail an otherwise promising career. Ja needs help, i'm just going to leave it at that.

2018: Marvin Bagley III - Picked before Luka (who the Hawks traded for Trae Young) and is barely in the rotation in a frontcourt-filled roster in Detroit. Not that they were the only team to screw up by not taking Luka but this was the Kings highest draft pick since 1991 where they picked Billy Owens 3rd in 1991 and Bagley is a Certified Bust™.

2017: Lonzo Ball - A promising 2-way guard whose career has been plagued by injuries. He's currently expected to miss his 2nd full season in a row after getting a 3rd surgery on his knee. Poor kid. At this point you just hope he'll be able to walk and run without issue after his time with the Bulls is done and over with. Injuries derailing careers is going to become a pattern, as you'll soon see.

2016: Brandon Ingram - Did someone say injuries? Zion might get most of the attention for absences on the Pelicans but Brandon has missed his fair share of time in New Orleans as well as his time with the Lakers. That said, when healthy he has and continues to play at an All-Star level and his last hurrah to will the Pelicans into the postseason saw him drop an efficient 42 points on OKC. One of the best players amongst this group; i'd say only Morant clear Ingram.

2015: D'Angelo Russell - When "He went 2nd?!" is one's immediate reaction to their name popping up, you know things haven't gone well for you. There was a time where D-Lo was next up, a promising young guard who even made the All-Star team once but since then, Russell has stagnated, becoming one of the least efficient starting PGs in the league and a consistent disappointment. He was borderline unplayable in the most recent playoffs with the Lakers (who traded him then traded for him a few seasons later, amusingly enough) and it's up in the air if he's going to be brought back. Somehow the Warriors managed to get Johnathan Kuminga and Andrew Wiggins for him.

2014: Jabari Parker - High upside swing that ultimately became a journeyman after a few decent seasons with the Bucks. Not much to say, he wasn't bad but you expect more from such a high lottery pick...I think?

2013: Victor Oladipo - Injuries, man. Injuries suck. Oladipo once looked like a franchise centerpiece for the Magic (later the Pacers) when he came into the league. A 2x All-Star for consecutive years...until the injuries piled up. If you name it, Victor has probably (and very unfortunately) had it. His most recent injury took him out of the rotation during Miami's Finals run. Victor had a decent career but he's a perfect case of what could have been being derailed by things you can't control in the league.
