I’ve been working at a cafe as a waiter now for 6 months and have found that my boss (The owner of the cafe) always takes all the tips we received from the day for himself. This is strange to me because the cafe is very social as most of the customers are older and retired, looking for a conversation. This means it’s actually pretty often for myself and other waiters to receive good tips for our service. I even recall one day a older gentlemen who I had served and talked to put a tip of $20 in my hand (which is more than I’m paid an hour). The tip was obviously for me and not the cafe however I was instructed to put it in the tip jar by the owner which just meant he got it at the end of the day. I’ve never felt the need to complain about this as I’m in high school living with my parents with no financial needs or obligations. But after my 6 months at this cafe I must have turned over a few hundred dollars to my manager in tips. Even on a few busy shifts I notice that the tips I receive are more than I’m paid meaning I literally make my owner more money individually than I cost him. Is this legal as it seems messed up especially for people who need the money and are not in an as fortunate situation as me.
