I've been a long-time customer of GOG.com, and since some time, SO MANY games I buy there have a native Linux version. Mostly, the supported Linux distributions are the LTS Ubuntu Editions, 14.04, 16.04, 18.04, and in one game I have, 20.04. This is even the case for older games of 5, even 10 years ago.

  • First: is this GOG.com itself, recompiling games to run natively on Linux, or are there really lots of developers that release a Linux version?

  • Second (and this is a bit more of a philosophical question): I run Debian Stable (previously 11, now the upcoming 12 that will be stable in a few weeks). However, many of those games require an old version of libssl1.0.0 and that library depends on the multiarch-support package. Without these packages, those games won't run; but since Debian 10, these packages are no longer in the system. I have installed them by downloading them from snapshot.debian.org and the games work. (This is akin to, in Windows, just chucking two old DLL versions in the game's directory or in c:\windows\system32 if you have to.) Some people are highly opposed against doing this, and recommend to "just use the Windows version in Wine", or "create an entire, old distribution inside Distrobox within your distribution to play these games". What is your opinion?

  • Third: would it be useful to e-mail GOG.com about the second point? If they are indeed the ones compiling the games, they could statically compile those two libraries into the game and they'd probably run on any distribution. Now, the future of these games is uncertain. In the future, libssl1.0.0 and multiarch-support from the older Debian versions may not be able to install on a new Stable, and having to run Ubunutu 18.04 or Debian 9 or 10 in Distrobox for years to come also doesn't feel maintainable.

  • Fourth: even the Windows games are running very well in Lutris, on either Lutris's Wine version, or their Proton-GE version. Of all the games I've tried to install, only one completely failed to run (Wolfenstein 2009). Other games either run from the get-go with no settings having to be changed, and some need a bit of tinkering to get going. (That is often the case on Windows too, especially with older games, so there's nothing new there.)

Gaming on Linux has come a very long way. I feel that, if you're not the person that wants to play the latest AAA+ titles competitively online, your chances of getting games to run on Linux are better than they ever were.

Cataclysm: Bright Nights is coming to GOG.com!

We are pleased to announce that we will release our game on GoG, thanks to nepotism, that u/SzQ has kindly managed to provide us with, because of personal contacts he has made in his Polish game company with CDPR, which is happy to help us!

Our game release exclusive features:

Actual coherence of GoG game description with in-game features! Bright Nights is a futuristic survival light roguelike! We don't describe our game as a modern roguelike, despite being a hardcore survival simulator! We don't make a fancy description to allure players, filled with hope of in-game characters countering zombie apocalypse, whereas actual lore remains incredibly dark and bleak! In Bright Nights our in-game characters can actually successfully counter zombie apocalypse on each playthrough, but how? Play and find out! Clear and concise description of "game is free, but you can still donate to us via GoG purchases" commercial model!

Our game is an open source, entirely free project on the Github platform! Link to both source code along with game releases will be clearly specified in GoG description, so players who have never seen Cataclysm before have a clear understanding of this project and won't accidentally give us money! We'd hate it if you ended up giving your money away because of a misunderstanding. Reading may be a lost skill in the modern era, but you can't say we didn't try!

Game is only 100 USD on GoG!

You wonder "Why is game only 100 USD? This is very cheap". Yes, we do know that for a donate purchase 100 USD is very little to ask. That's not even enough to buy a coffee for a single person! We know that various projects on Steam, on Patreon obviously charge more money, even when games themselves are early access, pretending to be complete games! Still, we want the best for you, which is why game is only 100 USD!

All this money will be given to u/SzQ, for pulling the strings we needed, we trust him to give us the money in a timely fashion and not spend it all on vodka and fast bicycles.

GitHub mods links install yourself ™️ integration! We don't need fancy Steam Workshop integration, when we have a guide to installation of third party mods with associated GitHub links, from which anyone can install these mods! Yes, you've heard that right! We actively support third party mods along with third party work!

Here at Bright Nights we are deeply grateful to modders for spending their time and effort enriching the game and offering their skills up to us for free! Even you can become a modder and add your own content, and we'll gladly help you bring to life your insane creations.
