TIL when Canadian singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen, who had a famously deep voice, quit smoking cigarettes at 77-years-old in 2012, he thought that his vocal range would become higher and improve. Instead, his voice became even lower.

[POEM]Love this, but it seems to fit with the ‘Instapoets’ style of seemingly pointless line breaks. Leonard Cohen’s work is diverse and this is not his only style-I was curious what the sub thinks. Is it ok because he’s shown an ability to express himself so many different ways?Wanna hear thoughts!

Journey Through Leonard Cohen #7: Various Positions

This is the continuation of my first-time listening journey through Leonard Cohen’s music.

Thoughts on the album: I feel the break from continuing this has been long enough. This was an album that I didn’t have the highest hopes for going in. Musical artists like Bob Dylan, David Bowie, The Rolling Stones and The Who have taught me to fear whenever a 60s/70s act starts making music in the 80s. I also wasn’t particularly fond of the Hallelujah covers I’ve heard. I also found his last album disappointing, so I feared a potential fall off. I took a break and intentionally tried to listen to more diverse artists in this time. Upon returning to Cohen’s discography with Various Positions; I’m glad to say my initial instincts were very incorrect. This album is amazing. Sonically I feel Cohen incorporates then modern elements in a very tasteful way. The synths add an atmospheric layer to the albums melancholic mood. Cohen’s voice feels significantly more powerful on this album compared to Recent Songs. There’s a very noticeable deeper quality to his singing here. Fits the whole mood of lovelorn melancholy very well. I feel the album’s biggest weakness is the noticeable lessening of the poetic sharpness within the lyrics. Various Positions does not contain Cohen’s most advanced collection poetry. His poetic quality shines through when needed though. Plenty of lines while seeming simple in comparison to lyrics from his early work, pack an incredible emotional punch. Sonically and lyrically Cohen is able to craft a series of songs which resonate very strongly. There’s immense beauty in tracks like ‘Dance Me to the End of Love’ and ‘If It Be Your Will.’ Great sorrow in tracks like ‘Coming Back to You’ and ‘Hunter’s Lullaby.’ There’s anxiousness in ‘The Law.’ ‘The Captain’ leaves a very ambiguous feeling. Typically the songs tend to feature intentionally conflicting emotions as well. Overall while the lyrics on the album might not be Cohen’s most complex, they accomplish a whole lot. Really Cohen returns with his confidence restored. He delivers a new, unique and atmospheric sound. Brings a new and powerful singing voice. Most importantly, he delivers an amazing and often beautiful collection of songs (really only The Night Comes On leaves me lukewarm). Also let me take a minute to say how much I prefer Cohen’s version of Hallelujah to the alternative versions I’ve heard. I feel a lot of people over do the song. Cohen’s delivery is understated, nuanced and communicates a series of somewhat conflicting ideas. I feel people try to focus too hard on just communicating the feeling of beauty, while Cohen’s trying to communicate a frustration and resolve related to dissonance between different forms of beauty (that of the holy/spiritual and the profane/physical). A true masterpiece of a song. I also love how him making this song set off a chain of events which would lead to old man Leonard talking about Shrek in one interview I saw. The icing on top if you will.
