Take My Energy

After three less than fruitful years, I made the decision to travel. Instead of going away for just a week or two, I made the slightly insane move of going to Southeast Asia for two and a half months. Arrival in Bangkok on March 8th, departure from Hanoi on May 20th. Everything in between, I had to figure out.

There was an initial dread setting in as I was taking my second plane in Vancouver. I was slowly getting used to the reality that I was going alone to the other end of the world. No one to help me.

It all melted away as soon as I recovered from the 12-hour jetlag. I was met with the utmost kindness from Thai people, over the simplest things. Helping a lady carry her cart up a set of stairs, or asking for directions in the metro to reach Ayutthaya. And in spite of the stark contrast in standards of living, I saw happiness around every corner. A few days was all it took to humble me in so many ways.

Ayutthaya has all the ruins it can muster, which is perfect for the architecture enthusiast in me.

Chiang Mai has the best weather in Thailand, the best Muay Thai gym, and the elephant sanctuary was a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Bangkok absolutely dwarfed me with its malls and its massive infrastructure.

Siem Reap was a definite highlight, with its Angkor temples that keep inspiring me to this day.

Phnom Penh was highly insightful about the horrors of the Khmer Rouge.

Ho Chi Minh City has lovely colonial architecture and endless knowledge about the Vietnam War.

Da Lat, while not being an ideal spot for solo travelers, was a quaint little corner of peace in the mountains.
