ARPGs--usually a game about class fantasy. Usually.

Path of Exile--often bucks that class fantasy in some weird way. Sometimes, you use totems to attack or cast spells (Ballista Toxic Rain, various Hierophant builds). Sometimes, you use weapons not often associated with magic to cast spells (E.G. a bow to cast Blade Vortex). Sometimes, you use traps or mines to cast spells or get spell-like effects (saboteur, fire trap, etc.).

And then...you have explode totems.

A build that's based around a drop-only item mod (crucible tree), which centers around:

Using a bow as a caster item
To throw traps
Which summon totems
Whose only purpose is to explode.

This is the absolute, most quintessential, peak Path of Exile layers of subverting ARPG class fantasies in order to create a build with a playstyle that isn't particularly smooth, but that just gets an absurd amount of damage for the investment in it.

It is peak Path of Exile in the way it completely subverts all manner of class fantasy in order to make number go up.

And things like this are what make PoE so iconic as a game.
