This will be a bit of a rant inspired by a video I just saw of Israeli reporter (Yossi Eli) who impersonated a franciscan friar and joined an actual priest on a walk around the Old City of Jerusalem. Just a few minutes later, he was verbally and physically assaulted, including being spat on by a religious jewish soldier in uniform.

I surely do not need to mention the situation of christian minorities in muslim countries (such as Egypt or Pakistan) which is much worse than this and we know of many cases of murders, rapes, lynchings and forces conversions.

It is beyond reasonable doubt that these attacks are motivated by interpreting religious texts in a way that categorise christians as idolaters/polytheists and consequently legitimise their persecution.

The question I want to ask is:

Irrespective of whether these text accurately describe christian beliefs or not, is it really necessary for Jews to subscribe to Rambams take on christianity (in contrast to that of other rabbinic authorities), is it really necessary for muslims to reinterpret negative quranic passages about the nasara as referring to mainstream christianity?

I guess this seems like one of those “why can't we just all get along posts” but it seems to me that this stuff is caused by unecesarily hostile interpretations, rather than essencial features of Judaism or Islam.

Thoughts?
