Since the SuperSonics relocated to Oklahoma, NBA fans have been waiting for the next big expansion to give Seattle a team again, over the past few years we’ve heard a lot about other exciting cities like Mexico City and Las Vegas as well. It feels all but certain that an expansion will happen… but when?

Personally I think we’ve waited a tad too long, previously I felt the idea of expanding the league to 32 teams seemed fun, but not a primary focus. With the new CBA and rapid improvement of talent, that entire conversation changes.

I could go on and on about some random young guy or player hiding on a teams bench that could average 20 in a starting position; but you already knew that, opening 30 roster spots in this league would allow guys to show their talents and hopefully improve the product, but I’m much more concerned with the financial side of the situation. Multiple NBA teams are in a lot of trouble with the salary cap, with a good amount of them also being well above the second apron.

If you’re not familiar with the new second apron, it’s a essentially the luxury tax level after 162 million, and it locks teams down into the team they have built and allows for little to no change or improvement in trading or signing. An expansion would allow teams to take on a few of these bad contracts and would ultimately improve the middle class of the NBA.

So, does the NBA need to expand?
