As a disclaimer, he's 23 years old, worked out for the Warriors & Lakers, and went undrafted. It's unlikely he'll play any serious minutes on an NBA court.
But based on this article + interview about him, I can see why Monte took the bet. He's a 7' tall guy with a 7'10" wingspan who shot at 49% from 3 in one of his recent seasons. He can grab rebounds, get blocks and deflections, and deter shots at the rim. But he's slow footed. However, this quote from the article reminded me of something:
For Stephens, the name of the game is being such an offensive powerhouse that it overrides any issues that arise on defense.
That's literally us! We only signed him to an Exhibit 10 though, so he'll likely play our Summer League games as the starting center. If he does well, I assume Monte wants to develop him in Stockton. I think that it's unlikely he'll be, as the article said, "passable" on defense, but maybe we don't need defense after all.
