Feels like a gut punch

Didn’t see that coming. Our big bundle of joy had cancer and had no external symptoms until it was way too late. He hid it until he no longer could. He enjoyed life until he no longer could. He left us on Saturday. I’m devastated.

I hear his paw at 5 pm when he demanded his dinner. I still don’t use some of his favorite words like let’s go. Then I realized there’s no need to.

And now comes the first Monday without him. The work from a home that feels more like a prison and a home office that is a prison cell.

I removed everything in the house except his favorite toy. But I can’t remove his bed from next to my desk. I have closed the door to where his bed is. But I sneak in every now and then and smell his bed and weep. It’s too painful. A constant gut punch.

Did anyone else take a post-mortem photo of their pet?

After my beloved Chihuahua mix, Chickpea, passed away, I took a picture of her on a whim. She looked very peaceful, like she was sleeping.

To quote Billy Joel, "I'm not sure about a life after this." But the photo reminds me that, no matter where she is, her suffering is over and she's at peace.

I'm sure some people would find the idea of a photo of a dead pet to be weird, or even morbid, but it brings me comfort to look at, and I'm wondering if anyone else has done this?

I can't go back to work

I gave my girl back to the universe last Saturday and I took this whole week off work. I work from home and by Wednesday I wasn't crying as much so I thought I might actually try and go back earlier but then I decided that I should just take the time to grieve so that I can be more "ready" for work next week. Well, yesterday was one of the hardest days yet and today is the same. I'm not ready to go back without having her there with me. Sitting under the desk while I rub her belly with my feet. Sitting next to my chair to protect me. Sitting by the door when she wants to leave my office and my meeting has run too long. Running in and out of the room when she wanted a snack. Waiting by the front door for walks on my breaks. She was my only emotional support and I genuinely don't know how I'm going to deal with the stress. For a lot of people work would be a distraction, but she was the only reason I was able to get through my day. Working will actually be the hardest thing to do because it's what we've done together for 8 hours a day for the last 3 years. I'm so scared.

Last night

My beloved Biscuit passed away last night. My family and I are still grieving. He’s been with us for 15 years. It feels so lonely without him. It’s so quiet and everything feels weird. It feels like he isn’t gone but I know he is. My little brother grew up with him so I feel like he feels everything 10x worse than I do. We have 2 other dogs. One of them is his daughter. In some ways I’m trying to find the good in all this like at least he lived a full and happy life. He was loved, cared for and had an adventurous life but I keep wishing he would’ve lived forever. Years back we had his best friend pass so at least he can be with him now, they can finally play together again and that makes me happy to know that Pulgas isn’t alone anymore and Biscuit will see his best friend again. I miss him so much.

Will it always feel this way?

Today marks 2 months since I said goodbye. I still cry most days at the thought of never seeing you again. It feels like you are just here yesterday but yet like I haven’t seen you in forever.

I still want to put food in your bowl and take on you out on the days with nice weather. I still anticipate you jumping up on my when I enter the front door.

All of your belongings have not been moved since you left me. Your bed in the living room, your basket of toys, your food bowls are all where you know them to be.

I still say good morning and good night to your the thought that I’ll never see you again instantly makes me cry. As much as I want to move on with my life I can’t bring myself to accept the hard facts that you’re no longer here.

It really feels like you’re still with me. I find myself blending over to pet you on the couch just to find an empty spot where you used to lay. I still sit at the front door when it’s sunny out just like we used to do together. I still find myself walking around the back yard like we used to play together. I still find myself blocking food that falls on the floor as if you were still here.

I want to see you again but all I have here is a little box of yours with your name on it. Please just show me you’re still with me. Does this go on forever?

My Cat is dying

Here I am again.. 8 months ago I lost my 16 year old boy Today I am here because my sweet girl who is also 16 ( she would of turned 17 in mid july) has gone into respiratory distress due to CHF.

She has been treated but the symptoms have come back and have gotten a lot worse.

She hasn't eaten the entire day and at times her breathing has gotten very labored with her mouth opened.A few times today she has laid down on her side with very heavy labored breathing.. At those moments I thought it was going to be her last breath. Then she get up, drinks some water and she goes into a crouching postion to help her regain her breath. That seems to be helping her a bit. This has been going on the entire day.

I have laid next to her, petting her in her favorite spots,she relaxes for a bit. Then she gets up to get away from me. It seems like she doesn't want to be bothered, she just wants peace and quite. I feel terrible just leaving her there, I am in the same room, but give her distance when she does that.. It's been such a rollercoaster all day for her and myself included.

I know that is the norm for Cats to pull away during those times . My boy was the opposite, he let me hold and love him to the very end.

It's so heartbreaking.. I don't know what to do. I want to hold her, pet her but I also don't want to create any more stress to her..

The worse thing is the Vet won't be able to come by to my home to euthanize her until Tuesday morning.. I do have meds to make her more comfortable.
