What are the best world history books to start with?

So, I'm Russian and i got completely confused in both American, European and Russian propaganda. I want to understand who's right and who's wrong. I finally forced myself to study the entire world history (maybe I'll skip some regions) from the first civilizations till modern times. My main goal is to understand the development of humanity and to understand why certain political decisions are made nowadays. So what are the best books to start from? I won't note any specific dates cos I won't pass any exams and my main goal is to gather overall backbone of human history to better understand what is going on nowadays, plus it'll help me better understand the context and circumstances in which some of my favourite writers and philosophers came upon their ideas. All advices are appreciated!

What historical period or event you used to enjoy searching about it in the past but nowadays it doesn't feels interesting anymore for you?

Why were the Spanish and Portuguese more willing to adopt the customs of the American natives than the English?

The Spanish and Portuguese became fanatical Christians who wanted to convert everyone because they constantly fought against the Muslims.

Meanwhile, the English were far away from the regions where the Christians fought the Muslims.

However, when it comes to colonization, the Spanish and Portuguese colonies seem to adopt more native cultures than the English colonies. While America did adopt African American culture, they didn’t adopt Amerindian culture.

Why?

Which U.S. president faced the greatest challenges? What about the easiest term?

I think hardest would be Abraham Lincoln.
