It is true that a lot of this film is shown from Tár's very subjective and increasingly warped point of view. The most "obvious" explanation, and I say that lightly because this is NOT an easy-to-decipher film, is that a lot of it is psychological tricks of the mind; that is to say, none of it is real. But I think the film becomes genuinely scary if you posit that a lot of it is actually happening as a result of a karmic force; that is to say, Krista.

We only ever see Krista a handful of times. There are two shots in the first scene, one very shortly after, both shot from behind, and another similar soon after—intentionally meaningless points of reference on first watch. On subsequent watches, they ensure you know how Krista has been there from the start.

As someone else commented on a different discussion thread, the extreme length of the opening scenes do a lot to show you how in control of her life Tár is. Even in the Juilliard scene, Tár, from her point of view, triumphs in a battle of wills with her student, effortlessly floating around the stage with an enraptured audience. Indeed, there is little reason to doubt that this is at this point true, even by the end of the movie.

Even early on, Tár is in some ways haunted by Krista, but I think in a non-supernatural manner. She receives the Challenge book, along with a pattern inscribed (of indigenous South American style, implying that Krista specifically sought to use the pattern because of Tár's history) and copious emails. Tár is obviously troubled by this, but at this point finds it easy enough to get rid of the signs.

Soon after this Krista kills herself. I don't actually have a copy of the movie anymore, so it's hard to tell exactly where, but if my memory of events serves me correctly, my guess is just before the Blair Witch Project screaming scene. This is afaik the first outright supernatural thing to happen, and this is doubled down on for me by the fact that it is intentionally chosen by Todd Field to be impossible (that is to say, I think the choosing of an already-existing real world movie sound effect is absolutely intentional). Thus, I reckon this is her first haunting. In the universe of Tár, perhaps after she died she immediately became a ghost and found she could influence Tár's world. So, I don't necessarily think that anyone else could hear the screams, but I do think otherworld Krista specifically aimed them to scare Tár.

Shortly after this (again, I think) Tar returns home. I do remember the timestamp here is 58 minutes. And almost immediately Krista can be seen in the background. I think the placement of the ghost here in the timeline is really important. It's now confirmed at this point that Krista is dead, but only subtly; I don't believe if she was alive her ghost would be here. But I truly do think here that she has come to watch, and this lets us know that she is there. Maybe Krista doesn't have to be physically present as she is in this scene all the time, but I like the idea that even if not, that she chooses to do it here. This is useful though because the film doesn't explicitly let you know what happened to Krista for a little while yet.

I also want to clarify that I am very sure the person in the back of the Juilliard scene is Francesca, and at this point there is not anything supernatural about the Juilliard scene.

Hereafter, many improbable things happen to the extent that they are inexplicable. Krista, now hiding in Tár and her wife's apartment, sets the metronome going. She forces Tár to wake up for increasingly unlikely reasons — by 2/3 of the way through the film, Tár is being awoken by nothing. She must scour around in the dark and Krista has the pleasure of being able to hide wherever. In the final instance of one such event, Krista visibly hides in a chair, watching on in comfort. This is the second and last time we see the ghost of Krista — at the height of her gleeful chaos. To haunt Tár in ever-more inescapable ways seems to make more sense

to me as an intentional act.

I believe this theory primarily because Tár never shows guilt throughout the movie. Indeed, if one assumes the 'dog' to be some sort of metaphysical manifestation of Tár's imagination, it makes more sense for it to be the feat of consequences than guilt. In my reading, Krista shows Tár the dog on purpose to scare her, which is why the sound design immediately preceding its appearance is impossible. I might goes as far as to say that the singing is Krista's herself, which is something I *just* came up with and is actually terrifying now that I've written it down, but it would absolutely make sense that Tár would become enraptured by this and be lured down into the darkness. I feel like this explanation might seem a little hard to swallow, not least because I haven't seen anyone else offer that up, but I feel more confident putting it out there as this is the exact time things really ramp up in the film. Also, I think for Krista to *not* literally be haunting Tár, and for Tár to be psychologically deteriorating of her own accord, would mean that Tár would have to feel guilt for what she did. But I think the film goes through pains to show us that this isn't the case, and this somewhat eliminates the possibility for me. Tár never shows guilt in the movie, she repeats the same actions wilfully over and over and only ever shows aversion to the consequences (and even then only sometimes).

One of the other strongest pieces of evidence I have for this is the scene where the daughter just looks at something. But there's nothing there, or more correctly, nothing that *Tár can see*. I think Krista selectively shows her presence here to the child specifically to freak Tár out further. By showing herself to another person, she subtly gives Tár the impression that this haunting is more real than just psychological. I also think this ties in nicely with Tár telling the other kid earlier "your parents will never believe you" because if Tár's daughter tried to tell her she saw Krista, Tár would never believe her.

I've never been fully satisfied by the relatively common dream sequence theory, which posits that everything from Tar trying to return the teddy bear onwards is not real. If Tár dreams the entirety of everything from when she finds the dog, it doesn't seem satisfying to me. Field is very specific about what he does and doesn't show, and I don't know his filmography apart from this film at all, but stopping the entire reality of the film to completely enter Tár's subjective otherworld just doesn't quite do it for me.

There are a couple of other things that this explains too. For example, the Juilliard leaked video is all but impossible in real life (too many things would have to click into place). But if we consider that Krista is now omniscient or whatever, and that she now has inexplicable powers, I don't see why she can't make and leak that video even if it doesn't make sense using real world logic. It then does make sense to me that Olga sees this and sends it on.

Speaking of Olga, I'm not entirely sure how she slots into this. Is she in any way being used by Krista as a type of pawn herself, or is her role of cellist truly as it seems? I like the idea that she is sent by Krista in a way, a replacement picked to ensure Tár falls into the trap that leads her further into her demise.

All of that said, I do think parts of this film are still seen from Tár's perspective, and are not as they actually are. The scene where she knocks over the conductor seems like one of these to me mostly because it seems like a very literal expression of Tár's frustrations, but especially the "epilogue" in Southeast Asia, which is intentionally presented as a mixture of real-life countries. (Others have already covered why this is.) If anything in this movie is outright not real, the epilogue would be my candidate. After all, Tár's Shakespearean fall from grace is now complete. If we were to say the epilogue isn't real, then maybe the fishbowl scene actually isn't Krista's doing. Maybe, now that everything has been taken away from her, Tár finally feels some "guilt" when she looks at the fishbowl (orchestra) in front of her, looks across to the right (perhaps where Krista would've sat, but certainly where Olga did) and sees No. 5 (Mahler's Symphony). Now that everything she knew has gone, is it really that bizarre that a reminder of the past makes her throw up? So in my opinion, perhaps Krista is content now, and there is little reason to think she is still actively involved with Tár's life, at least for the time being. The way she is being treated by the world is enough punishment now (e.g. Tar being given a click track in her final performance), as well as the knowledge that she can come back and continue to haunt Tár in perpetuity. This is also why I think the tone changes a bit here and what paves the way for an admittedly (but not accidentally) funny ending.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this? It's a little unusual I have thoughts so seemingly off the beaten path for a movie, which is why I think opinions would be useful lol, I might have dug myself into my own rabbit hole. But I think I might have to watch the film again with these ideas in mind to be sure, because I only really formulated this theory after the second watch.
