[FS] [US-AL-Huntsville] - My Recently Decommissioned 60TB FreeNAS server

I'm selling my recently decommissioned Network Attached Storage (NAS) server. This computer features 60 raw terabytes across a dozen 5TB drives.

I ran FreeNAS (now TrueNAS) on this computer. It would be happy enough as a Linux or UnRAID server as well.

11 of the 12 drives were put into operation in February 2016. The 12th drive replaced one that failed around the summer of 2018, so they will have a consummate number of power-on-hours on them, as this server was running mostly 24/7/365 until January of this year. The drives themselves are no longer under warranty. Most of the stuff in the case is no longer under warranty!

My FreeNAS 9.2 finally died

Ive had this server for 6 years now. I set it up as FreeNAS 9.2, years ago. That was the latest build at the time.

I installed it on a Dell C2100. I was going to type PowerEdge but, it's not a normal server. It's their 'Cloud' series that was mean to have no real front.

12 x 2TB 5400 RPM SATA drives and an internal SSD for boot and OS.

I installed UrBackup in a Jail and it's been running as a core and fully internal UrBackup server for the last 6 years. It's been amazing solid and while the FreeNAS continues to be, the hardware is finally failing. I did buy it used 6 years ago.

No, the drives were all new. The rest of the server hardware was used, at the time.

I had a weird issue a few months ago where the boot drive disappeared and wouldn't reappear until the SATA Cable was replaced and then it would only boot from powered off state. A reboot would fail to find the drive. Clearly, there's a motherboard issue happening.

A day ago, it gave up the ghost and won't post anymore.

I'm planning to transfer the LSI card, 12 SATA drives and boot/OS SSD to a newer HP DL380e G8.

FreeNAS 11.1-U7 to TrueNAS Scale in new chassis & boot medium

Long time FreeNAS user here. I'm still on FreeNAS 11.1-U7, at first because of jails, and after eliminating my jails, due to sheer laziness because it just worked. I have no jails, plugins, encryption, etc. Pretty much plain Jane SMB and NFS.

I'm looking to move to TrueNAS Scale from my 11.1-U7 installation. My current setup is 16GB RAM, 6 x 8TB HDD, booting off of mirrored USB flash drives. My new setup will be in a new chassis, 32GB RAM, booting off of an NVMe drive. I want to move the 6 x 8TB drives from the old chassis to the new chassis.

All of the guides/posts/tutorials I've seen generally reuse the current chassis, don't change the boot medium, etc.

What I'm hoping is that I can back up the current configuration, shut down the old chassis, install the drives in the new chassis, install TN Scale, and upload the backed up configuration file.

Is this feasible, or will this get a lot more complicated?

Hyper Backup performance to Synology NAS compared to a different NAS (e.g. FreeNAS)?

Is there a performance advantage to backing up to another Synology NAS, e.g. block-level backup or hash-based comparison? I could not find anything to this extent in the documentation?

Backing Up (Replication Tasks) my FreeNAS to a external Drive

Hi,

I want to Backup my complete NAS to an external HDD that is plugged in directly into my NAS.

I did some research and have been told to use the task Replication Tasks. But since I don't want to back it up on a different Server (SSH) and I can't find the option to select a drive (and not a pool). I don't know how to move on.

Plugging it into my PC and transfer the data manually is not an option for me.

Does anyone has an Idea how to proceed?

OpenMediaVault or FreeNAS, which one best fits my requirements?

I have a i9 machine running winblows 10, that has a storage space with 2 netapp 24 bay shelves with about 40 hard drives in a full mirror, giving me about 130tb of usable space.

I believe i am reaching the limits of what storage spaces is able to do. It already takes about 10 minutes for the management app to start, that plus my blue screen problems that have been creeping up, its time for me to switch.

So my swap plan is pretty easy. Buy a third shelf, put 2 20tb drives in it. Buy a new (used) server with a san card in it, install a NAS OS, then start moving files from the old array to the new one, moving hardware when its it free, up until i have everything on my new 3 shelf NAS system.

Unraid won't work for me, i already have over 30 drives.

This leaves me with FreeNAS or Open Media Vault. I can see me filling all three shelves with drives before i start swapping small drives out for bigger ones. (yes, i know there are other ways of doing it, but i want this technique). I know both of them will accomplish the same thing in the end, but my question is, Given my setup (used server data center equipment), is one any better than another? I used OMV for a while to link up several USB drives on a raspberry pi, but that was a LONG time ago.

I'm leaning towards FreeNAS over OMV. Given my setup, are there any reasons i would choose OMV over FreeNAS?
