Alex O'Connor (born May 4, 1998), better known by his stage name Rex Orange County, is an English singer-songwriter. Hyped by Tyler, The Creator and scouted by BADBADNOTGOOD for a collaboration, Rex’s songs are “sarcastic, wit-fledged and full of charming rough edges. His genre is a fluctuating hybrid maundering between contemporary jazz, r&b and electronic. From: https://genius.com/artists/Rex-orange-county

This is a tweet in response to Jokic passing English for first all time in assists for the nuggets. Lots of respect from one of the all time greats

The tweet

"I knew that eventually my all time assist record would be broken. I'm honored to see that it's 2 time, I mean 3 time MVP of the NBA do it. Congrats big fella. #Joker #NikolaJokic "

1) From ‘81-89, English averaged between 24-30 ppg every season. He was an 8x All-Star ('82-89), 3x 2nd-team All-NBA ('82, '83, '86), and was the scoring leader in '83 (28.4 ppg). Notice that even in the season he led the league in scoring he was still only 2nd-team All-NBA. He did not elicit "Wow!"s or high praise, even when he was leading the league in scoring.

2) He scored 2,000 points in 8 straight seasons, a streak matched only by Karl Malone who did it 11 straight. Think of all the guys who scored a ton of points forever (Jordan, Wilt, Kareem, Iverson, LeBron, Harden, Kobe, Dominique, Gervin), and none of them did this. He missed making it 9 straight seasons by only 71 points, scoring 1,929 points in '81.

3) English scored the most points in the 80s, and it wasn't even that close. Tops was English (21,018 points), then Moses Malone (19,082), Adrian Dantley (18,157), Larry Bird (17,899), and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (16,246). That’s everyone over 15k.

4) Similarly, in ‘89 at the age of 35, English averaged 26.5 ppg, the top-scoring season ever for any player 35 or older. Although LeBron James averaged 30.3 ppg in ‘22 at 37 years old, he also only played 56 games and did not qualify as a league leader. LeBron has a chance again this season ('23) to top English's mark if he plays enough games.

5) English operated out of the mid-range, basically just shooting 10-15 feet jumpers from WAY above his head with long/lanky arms so no one could block or stop it. He was boringly consistent (never missed games, kept averaging the same ppg every year, scoring in the same predictable way) which seems like a backhanded compliment about someone who kept pumping in 25-30 ppg every night.

6) He was the top player on those super-fast Denver teams of the 80s. He scored 47 points in the highest-scoring game of all-time (186-184 L to Detroit in 1983), was on the '83 team that had the top-2 scorers in the league on it (English & Kiki), and he was the key guy on the '85 team that went to the WCF. If English wasn't hitting mid-range jumpers, he was laying in fast breaks, which happened a lot with that team. Seriously, those were basically the only two ways he scored all those points.

7) He was so boringly consistent and not wow-worthy (barely dunked, barely shot 3's, wasn't much of a 1-on-1 attacker, rarely had huge scoring nights, didn't get to the line much since he didn't really challenge the defense, doesn't have clutch moments/highlights, never showboated or yelled) that he's easily forgotten. Not only that, the Nuggets made noise in the playoffs only once when he was there (faced LA in WCF in '85), so no one outside of Colorado really remembers him.

8) English was a beloved "nice guy" who teammates loved. He was the Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award winner in '88.

9) In addition to scoring consistently at a good efficiency (career .511 FG%, higher than other wings with a ton of career points), he averaged a consistent 6 rpg and 5 apg during his great 9-year run, but his defense was pretty bad. Awful might be more accurate.

10) He's considered to have very solid fundamentals (ex: he had phenomenal shot selection), but you would never coach a kid to mimic his arms-straight-above-his-head jumper.
