As you all likely know, Reddit is destroying 3rd party apps by raising the price of API access (the number is unreachable) in an attempt to raise the market value when Reddit becomes publicly traded soon. The app is garbage and I personally refuse to let them profit off my personal data and cramming ads down my throat in the native app. Combine this with the fact that most mods (the people that run their site for free) use mod tools provided by third party software that use that API. If they follow through with this a ton of mods will leave and Reddit will no longer be what we know it to be.

They are doing this because they don't think we have a choice. But I personally don't want them to be right so I have been using Lemmy. And so far it feels like Reddit did 10 years ago. The only thing I will miss is this place on game day. Doom scrolling the game thread while watching the game go hand and hand at this point.

So, I created a Lemmy "community" (The equivalent of a subreddit)

I have absolutely no clue what I am doing, and I copied a few of the top current posts over there so I wasn't so lonely.

A few things I learned about Lemmy:

  • Lemmy is part of the "Fediverse" a group of different platforms that all have different "instances" (servers) that all talk to each other. It doesn't matter if you join lemmy.ml or lemmy.world or beehaw.org, they all see the same posts. This seems over complicated but it's really not. You just go to https://join-lemmy.org/ and join an "instance". Doesn't really matter which (although lemmy.ml is getting hammered right now so another may be better, it hasen't been down yet though). The reason it is like this is so it is decentralized. Not one person, or company can randomly decide in 15 years that they want to destroy it to make money off of your content.

  • When you apply you have to fill out a couple questions and it takes like 5 minutes to be approved.

  • There is an android app called Jerboa that works pretty well. There is one on ios, not sure what it's called though.

  • There are no ads anywhere, it is all donations.

So join me please. I will miss you guys.
