'Remain in Accenture so you will land a great job in another company'

I like working at Accenture but I just cannot see myself working 12 hrs a day with this level of stress all my life. I know some people who worked in consulting companies and now they are managers somewhere else and all say the same thing: stay there to build your career and then move to another good company. But move to where exactly?and how?

This is going to sound cliche, but my experience at Accenture has been if you set your boundaries, 12 hour days aren’t happening. Are you getting overtime for those hours above 8? Or are you just allowing your manager to push you that hard? Before making your mind up on leaving the firm, I’d consider taking your skills to another project, or choosing a different path within - maybe a different People Lead or Manager is 80% of the issue, 20% is your project.

Your call of course, but there’s so many other places to go INSIDE and paths to take, that I’d consider all other options before leaving. Regardless, I wish the best for you, and hope you get more balance in your life. Hang in there!

I agree with this, I did the long hours at the bottom of the pyramid but as I have become more senior (now L7) one of the skills most master is setting boundaries. I tend to work a 9-5 and will work in the evening very occasionally if I really need to.

any idea how to leave a current project without any project in hand?

Working 12hrs a day could well be your problem.

So probably worth investigating that.

What if you have the same problem when you move to industry / client?

What other consulting company did you land with if you don’t mind me asking? Assuming it’s a boutique firm ?

change project or people lead. The only reason why I am still with Accenture is, that I have a PL who is a really nice guy. I very seldomly work too much and when I do, I usually get it back and a lot of praise (which is fine for me). Before him I would have gotten on a project for a very toxic guy and I swear (and told my friends) I would quit working for that guy in the first week. Accenture is so big, from very bad things to very good things all can happen there.

Never did long hours unless it was due to an important, last minute delivery or incident.

My worklife balance is great. Never in my career in consulting did I do 12 hours a day over several weeks.

The grass is not always greener on the other side - been there. No consultancy is perfect. There will always be tradeoffs. Some will give you better pay than Accenture, but demand unreasonable hours, some will ask you to wear a tie even during summer, etc.

Accenture's brand is so strong in the market; remember, no one likes a jumper.

I mean i work at a auto shop as a express lube tech, surely working at Accenture can’t be worse at the place I’m working right? Been trying to get in there myself. How hard is it to get a job at Accenture? I’m currently a grad student going for my M.A in communication. Any position there would be great.

Communications is not an ideal degree for this. Stick with engineering/CS or a top 15 MBA (although accenture is not quite MBB so you can broaden your school search a little bit...maybe top 25 MBA).

I have a communications degree and my graduate job was with Accenture. DM me if you want any guidance

Polish your LinkedIn. Start reaching out and building your network with other Accenture folks. See if there’s anyone in your circle that works at Accenture that would refer you, or ask around internally for opportunities. Even coming in at an entry level role is worth it in the long run. Excited to hear about your success! Build that network. Knowing the right people can change everything. Best of luck!
