Ampeg, Hartke, Markbass or else?

I want to hear opinions of fellow bass players about their preferable cabs. Personally I love the sound of Hartke's because of their middy-punchy tone. I play p-bass with a rat pedal, and Hartke's are the best to cut through guitars and still sound good in live mix in my opinion. What's your choice, bassists?

Ampeg 8x10 or not?

I have been going through tons of cabs in the last few months in a project I have. I have an ampeg pf-800 amp and have used an Ashdown 4x10 with a 1x15. It distorted. I got a Yamaha can with two EV 15in speakers. Sounds good but doesn’t cut through the mix. I found this ampeg 8x10 with an svt-450 for about 1200 bucks. I could see the amp after the fact and get some money back. I really never have to move the cabinet, it’s always at my studio. However, should I just get an swr 4x10 or something? I live in a rural area so buying amps usually means getting something shipped to me. I can’t just go and try them. Closest big city is like 2 hours away. I’m just tired of spending money and not getting results and then I see all my heroes using 8x10 cabinets. Thanks for any advice.

I’ve been rocking my GK800rb through my 8x10 for the past while and god… it sounds amazing. however, with a couple week tour looming over me I am having nightmares about lugging a fridge around. What would be a decent alternative that could retain the same-ish sound and also save my back and some space in the van? playing postpunky/shoegazey/post hardcore stuff

Just cant decide between those 3. I can get all 3 for the same price second hand all in good condition. Idealy i want a nice dirty overdrive. I know the SVT doesnt have it but i would just buy a pedal what would make it a bit expensive but still okay. I want to start playing in a Band so it should be loud enough.

Why is the 300W Ampeg SVT amp head considered such a powerhouse when 500W is recommend for most larger gigs?

Why is the 300W Ampeg SVT amp head considered such a powerhouse when 500W is recommend for most larger gigs?

Why does a 300W Ampeg SVT-CL head provide enough power for a typical gig? I read that the general rule of thumb is that the bassist needs 5x the power of the guitar player. Since most guitar players are using 100W heads, it stands to reason that a typical bass player will need 500W to not be drown out over the drums and guitar.

Ampeg's 4x10 cabinets are 500W, and by my understanding, the 300W SVT head can't even get the full tone and volume out of that cabinet. I've heard of bassists running two 8x10 cabinets off of a single SVT amp, so I feel like there is something here that I'm not understanding.

Most of the solid state amps I've been looking at are in the 800W category, and I've been told that especially for gigs, at least 500W is ideal to run the necessary speakers. This makes a 300W SVT head seem underpowered.

What is it that I'm not understanding here? Does it have something to do with the fact that the SVT is a tube amp? Is it the resistance of the cabinets it's being run through? Please help.

Looking for that Ampeg sound in a pedal.

Yeah, I know there are a ton out there lol

I’ve been messing around with the bogren std bassknob and stuck a sansamp plugin before it. Nailed a sound that I’ve been after for a bit. What I’m looking for is a pedal that’ll get me in the ballpark of this tone

https://youtu.be/0Gpuekc3A_U?si=p1D7nwllvYriqyQq

The Master Effects Super 300 really interests me. I know there’s also the VT Bass(and Darkglass’ version, though I’m not too fond of Darkglass). What else would be out there to get that tone?

An Ampeg V-2 in a pedal: modelling

Hi there, I made a post the other day about modelling the power stage of a tube amp with the conclusion of "keep it simple" (you can see it here).

Well, I put together the circuit in LTSpice and thought I'd share it to whom it may concern.

My vacation is soon over so I'm unlikely to finish this any time soon, but for anyone else interested in having something similar-esque to an old Ampeg V-2/V-4/VT-22/VT-44 in a pedal format, I've done my darndest to be somewhat true to the original while being limited to JFETs (and as you will see, one op-amp).

The reference is somewhat of a hybrid between the original V-2 (primarily the output stage) and the 1976 distortion model, although I am only modelling channel 2 which is the clean channel.

The notable changes are:

  • All valves replaced by JFETs. Biasing is in the end done to taste. I chose J113 here.

  • The volume knob is 1Meg instead of 500k

  • In the tone stack I changed C9 to 1n instead of 470p. This doesn't terribly change the response of the treble control but it recovers some of the bass bump added by the original tube circuit.

  • The midrange pot is replaced with a 20k W-taper (instead of the 50k Lin taper). Also, the Capacitors C13 and C14 where changed to 1µF instead of 680nF to compensate for the inductors all being 100mH instead of the increasing 100-200-500mH in the original. This does change the Q factor somewhat but I think it's ok if one doesn't dime the midrange knob.

  • I omitted one of the gain pentode stages between the tone stack and the power stage, mainly so that I wouldn't have to attenuate.

  • At the push and pull pair I added resistor R26 and R27 at the sources of the JFETs to tame some of the gain added.

  • The final output tubes are omitted. I considered adding a pair of common-drain followers but decided against it.

  • Instead of an output transformer, I am using a TL072 as a differential amplifier (unity gain), followed by an active inverting attenuator that brings the output signal down to line level (when volume is maxed).

Figure 1 Above is the circuit I have landed on.

All the definitions at the top are just there for the knobs. The profile definitions define the logarithmic and w-tapers for the knobs, so volume = 0.5 is the volume knob at noon with the resistance being 10% for example.

Figure 2 Transfer function with all knobs at noon.

One could perhaps add some more high end attenuation to tame the distortion a bit. The -3dB cutoff for the low frequency is just at about 72Hz which is great for guitar but on the high side for a bass.

Figure 5a 300HzFigure 5b 1kHzFigure 5c 3kHz

Above are the midrange knob from 0 to 1, switched from the three frequency settings (300Hz, 1kHz and 3kHz). The Q-factor of the boost and cut is not symmetric (due to choice of resistor value for R15) and Q increases with frequency (in the original). I personally think Q should decrease with frequency but hey, I don't make or sell amazing amps!

Figure 6 Clipping with the volume knob set from 0 to 1 in 1 steps

The input signal is a 1kHz sinwave at 0.2Vpp. This is with the sensitivity switch set to -12dB which keeps the preamp stage *almost* clean until dimed. That way you will mainly get clipping at the output stage. Pushing the preamp harder with a boost or change the sensitivty to 0dB push the preamp stage in to clipping, letting you layer your saturation in both the preamp and output stage.

Figure 7a THD with volume = 0.5 (grey curve in Figure 6, still "clean")Figure 7b THD with volume = 0.7 (blue curve in Figure 6, modestly saturated)

As it's pushed in to clipping, the ration between odd and even harmonics increases. There is significant 2nd harmonics due to the JFET amplifiers, particularly with their biasing in the preamp. It's not very representative of the harmonic content of a triode but

a) It'll never be perfect and

b) I like me some even-harmonic distortion.

That's all folks. I'm hoping to build the output stage in the foreseeable future. So far I'm focused on getting the preamp and tone stage built this week. No promises on anything though, but when (if?) I get to it, I'll but sure to update you. It won't be pretty though, I'm an engineer who happens to enjoy art, not an artist who happens to enjoy engineering hehe

Please feel free to shamelessly steal and use any and all of the above if it interests you. If anything that would be flattering! More pedals to the people <3

What is it about the Ampeg SVT Classic/Heritage that makes it so sought after compared to most other amps?

I know that the SVT has a long history in music. Most of the bassists I know have named it as their dream amp. As far as tube amps go, the Heritage USA version is more expensive than either the Fender SuperBassman or the Orange AD200b. I know that it has the muscle to power even the largest bass cabinets.

All of that being said, is there anything about the tone of the SVT that makes it preferable to more modern and less expensive high-end amps from Mesa, Aguilar, Darkglass, Trickfish, Ashdown, etc? If I can put it another way, aside from the esteemed history and coolness factor of the this amp, why should someone spend the money on an SVT head?
