Alec Burks: A Move that Wouldn’t Take a 1st

Discussion

This team obviously needs shooting and size. Our guards are quite undersized. Everyone is focused on Bojan over in Detroit (despite the Pistons saying he is part of their future which I don’t fully buy). To me, if Bojan gets traded, it will be because a team overpaid, and I REALLY don’t want us to be that team. Instead, I like Burks as a fit quite a bit. I am personally in the favor of trading Westbrook, but this wouldn’t be a Westbrook deal. It would, however, complement any Westbrook deal we make quite well.

Over the last 4 seasons, Burks has shot over 40% from 3-point land. This season alone he is shooting 44.6% on 4.5 attempts. He is 6’6” and a positive defender as well. In my eyes, his $10 million contract is well-worth it. He also has a $10 million team-option for next season, which could either serve as a steal for us, or provide us that cap flexibility our front office loves so much if we decide not to exercise it.

Contractually, we could either send Beverley by himself, or Lonnie + a Veteran Minimum Player (JTA). Either one of these works. Of course, we would have to attach draft capital, although I personally believe that this move wouldn’t necessarily take a 1st Round Pick, which makes it all-the-more enticing.

There’s also possibilities to integrate this move into bigger deals as well. For example, we could help facilitate a trade for another team who wants Bojan. The following is just an example, maybe not a very good one, but I just wanted to demonstrate what I meant by facilitate a Bojan trade. The contracts in this example work and I am too lazy to create another example, so we’ll just look at this one.

Suns want Bojan. Their package is Crowder + Saric + a 1st. If we wanted, we could send Beverly + Lonnie to Detroit NOT for Bojan, but instead for Burks and to reroute Crowder to LA. Detroit gets a Suns 1st, Saric, Beverly, Walker, and LA Draft Capital for Bojan and Burks. Suns get Bojan. We get Crowder and Burks for PatBev, Lonnie, and draft capital. Again, this isn’t the perfect example, but it highlights how we could get Burks + some ~$10 million player from a team trading for Bojan.

TLDR: Burks is a great fit and seemingly attainable. There’s also a lot of room to get creative in a move that lands us Burks (as highlighted by my imperfect Suns example).

Alec Burks solves a lot of issues for this team

Mock Trade

He’s far from the sexiest trade piece. I know a lot of Nets fans want Kuzma or John Collins, but I don’t understand their fits besides they’re good rebounders. Kuzma can be a ball stopper and his jumper is erratic at best. Collins can’t play with Ben and claxton.

Joe-Warren-Yuta

With Ben’s free throw shooting woes, that’s really only 2 ball handlers.

Unfortunately Seth and even more so Patty are looking washed. That’s the spot this teams need an upgrade. Derrick White/Malcolm Brogdon for Celtics, Deanthony melton for sixers, nets don’t have that guy. The end of Cavs game showed how desperately nets need another ball handler.

Burks is a really nice Swiss Army knife who’s not elite anywhere but doesn’t really have a weakness. He’s 6’6”, has shot at least 39% from 3 four years in a row, and has a bit more playmaking juice than your typical 3 and D guy.

Mills looked straight cooked and Seth’s offense isn’t nearly good enough to justify his defense this season, particularly next to Kyrie. Burks is the perfect bench guard for this team.

You also can save 2027 sixers pick for a bigger move. I have a lot of pistons fans in my life and they agree Cam + 2025 heat second rounder is fair value, then one of Seth or Patty for salary purposes.

Nets need someone with low usage who can handle the ball, make a free throw, and defend guards. Those guys are hard to find. Burks is a near perfect low cost option, he’s weirdly clutch too.

I feel the need to put I’ve been on this Burks to the nets for like 6 weeks now and his game last night is just a coincidence lol
