Outside of a currency system, does gold or silver have an actual value to you? Where does gold fall on your scale of value?

If I had 100 kilos of flour and you had 100 grams of gold, what would you offer me?

Your cow had twin calves and I want to buy the other one. Is 8 grams of gold enough? Why not 10? Or 4?

Food, water, spices, medicals supplies will all have constant need. Animals, furniture, and housing will be sparse. Needing new weapons and ammo should be rare. Gold has almost no layman use outside of jewelry, so why trade it regularly? I mine gold as a hobby and let me tell you, there will not be a new injection of gold into the system if SHTF. The easy and good gold is long gone and it takes an enormous amount of work to secure what we can now and that is WITH an infrastructure.

So many lessons here. First, these kids knew enough about their environment to find food to eat. Flour and fruit aren't a complete diet, but it was enough to keep them alive, and the primary problem seems to have been dehydration. (Water is always prep one, regardless!) The eldest girl had picked up just enough local knowledge to keep them all alive... teach your children well. It can matter.

Second, people always scream about how the government can't be relied on, but it was the army that found these kids, not the locals. I'm not downplaying groups like the Cajun Navy, but governments have resources for this kind of thing and it often pays off. Support government intervention systems - it could be your kids out there someday.

Next, these kids would have been better off with a disaster bag. They grabbed flour from the plane, but 4 weeks of emergency rations, a flashlight and a battery powered radio, something that could have done an automated SOS, would have made this so much easier. Have a bag packed when you travel. Keep the cel phone charged, or in areas without reliable cel, have some other system to transmit.

It doesn't always end this well, but there's an 11 year old hero in this story, and a lot of army folk who made it work. Teach your kids to prep.

China leading in 37/44 areas of emerging technology

I was at a conference earlier this week and even though this report has been out for a few months the stats were noticed by all in Cybersecurity. It was stated that where China is ahead, they are light years ahead and where we lead, we’ll lose that lead in the next 5 years. As far as prepping goes, I would say have preps that aren’t tied to anything digital because there may be a time when nothing digital will work. An EMP isn’t necessary to take a country down. Russia did a cyber attack on Ukraine in 2017 that brought most of the country down and what saved them is the fact that they never upgraded all of their systems to digital. If an attack were to happen to us, it would be over since we have everything connected to the net.

Advice and Tips

Community building in an “every man for himself” style neighbourhood?

So a little backstory: I’ve been living in my current neighbourhood in central Canada for a long while. I live in “the bad part of town” with a high crime rate, and I thought my neighbours mostly kept to themselves. I didn’t see many opportunities to get involved until I joined my local community association.

I started to really get to know the regulars through the association, and it’s been a bit of a mixed bag. There’s some great people in my neighbourhood who want to see things improve and want to help their neighbours, and there’s others who seem to have a very selfish mindset that seems more focused on keeping people out.

It’s wildfire season here. A few years ago there was a small Canadian town (Fort McMurray) that burnt entirely to the ground due to wildfires, and where I live there are concerns that something similar could happen again, either to our city or to one nearby. This is how I got into prepping.

In trying to build community I shared some basic wildfire awareness measures on the community association’s page, with one of the recommendations simply stating “check on your neighbours to see if they need help”. I got some positive feedback, but largely the responses I got took issue with this suggestion and my post got deleted.

I don’t know where to go from here. There’s no real sense of community, but some of us clearly want more. Is it a lost cause? Should I just continue doing my own thing?
