He was boycotted for usual reasons - being a Muslim & hence automatically assumed to be anti-Hindu.
The movie probably flopped because people didn't like it. Akshay Kumar's Raksha Bandan released at the same time & did worse than LSC. So I don't think the boycott had any significant impact.
These chaddis have been calling for a boycott of all Aamir movies since the time of PK & many of those have been huge hits. A lot of movies flop & they are now taking credit for it.

Looks like Nationalist NRIs are watching the movie in droves.
And the movie has not yet been released in China where Aamir is super popular among the natives - Dangal grossed 1,300 crores in China.
