There are many actors, comedians, all round artists who have a very 50/50 - love or hate schtick. Generally it's a fairly distributed and well known split between their fans and those who aren't so keen.

However, it seems that for someone with such a nauseating schtick as Jim Carrey, everyone seems to love him and his whole gimmick. I just don't understand it really.

He always has to be the loudest in the room, centre of attention. His comedy isn't smart or based off a quick whit, he just contorts his body or face in a weird way and makes a goofy sound or voice.

I don't deny that he is a good dramatic actor, so I must stress that I'm mainly talking about his "comedy".

Edit: For people saying "but that's the point of that type of comedy"... I know. I'm not saying "I don't like this comedy that Jim Carrey has accidentally done". I'm saying that I find that type of comedy crap. That's why I think he has crappy humour, because he genuinely thinks it's funny and does it on purpose.

Edit 2: People telling me that I don't like slapstick. Untrue. I love Monty Python, Mr Bean, Buster Keaton. Let's take Bean as an example. The source of comedy in Mr Bean is not the stupid faces or noises that he does, that's simply an aspect of the character. A way in which to focus on the well written and thought out slapstick. Whereas Jim Carrey is all silly voices and faces. Jim Carrey does what a clown does, but without the face paint and massive shoes.

Final edit:

  1. If you're saying that I obviously haven't watched many of his movies. You're wrong, I've seen them and I didn't like his delivery, hence this post.

  2. If you're saying that I should watch his more dramatic roles and I'll change my mind, then firstly, you've ignored my post where I said he's a good dramatic actor, and secondly, you've proven my point. Because you're suggesting I watch toned down Jim Carrey in order to enjoy him.

  3. If you're saying that I just simply don't like slapstick or absurdist, you're wrong. I just don't like Carrey's delivery. I love rock, but not every rock band.
