Thought I would post our first Tesla purchase story and experience for others to learn from.

We ordered our MYP on 2/3 and took delivery on 2/27. Like most new Tesla owners we were extremely excited on delivery day. When we arrived our vehicle was nowhere to be found. We went to talk to the advisor, she went out back to check, said they were finishing up prepping the car and will have it out front shortly.

We enjoyed some coffee and snacks while we waited and were informed the car was ready. Super excited, we went to the front and there she was. We inspected the exterior and started to notice a few issues.

  1. The rear spoiler was not fully attached on the left side. So there was a gap between the spoiler and the trunk.

  2. Some jagged paint imperfections on the driver side fender and rear passenger door jam.

  3. A paint blemish on the rear passenger door.

  4. Cracks on the underside of the trunk just above the license plate holder.

  5. The car was dirty and still had plastic stuck in the liners of the interior.

  6. Black smudges in random areas in the interior.

  7. Misaligned passenger door, did not sit flush when closed

Needless to say we were pretty deflated instantly. We informed the advisor and she said you can reject the car or accept delivery and put in a service request to have those issues repaired. Not knowing anything about how Tesla service works and we were just so anxious to have the car after a month long wait, we decided to accept the vehicle and proceeded to put in a service request for the issues.

Our first service appointment was about a week after taking delivery. Dropped off the car, the service advisor (SA) reviewed and updated the notes, we both walk out to the vehicle and the SA pulls out the orange tape to identify and mark the areas that need to be serviced. The SA said this service should take about 4 -5 hours to complete, except the paint issues will need to be completed on a different service ticket since our car would need to go to a Tesla approved third party body shop. She said we can either wait or come back. Since the MYP was our only car, we kindly requested a loaner and were given a slightly abused M3 to get around in the meantime. We were grateful to have a loaner and not have to wait around while our car got serviced.

We were able to check on the status of our service as each item was completed via the app. About 4 hours later we get a message from a SA in the app to come pick up our car. There was no paperwork to sign, just handed the loaner key back to the SA and he told us to have a good day.

We walk out to our car and do a quick walk around and drive home. When we got home we noticed some issues were resolved but also new issues appeared. Our passenger door closed flush now but was not latching properly. We would have to slam the passenger door with a good amount of force in order to get it to latch properly. It was also now misaligned vertically.

So one resolution created another problem. Back into the app we went to identify the new issue and schedule another service appointment. The next available appointment was on 4/4 due to the body shop availability for the paint issues. We enjoy the car in the meantime drop it off on 4/4. Same process as before, orange tape to mark issues and this time they give us a MX, a bit beat up but we were stoked to try it out and happy for the loaner. The service advisor said it should take about a week for your car to be ready.

Here is where the nightmare begins.

A week goes by, we don't hear anything from Tesla.

We give it exactly 2 weeks before sending a message at 8:10am on 4/18 in the app to check on status of our car. We receive a reply at 4:13pm saying the body shop said the car will be ready on 4/21.

4/21 we message Tesla, they respond 3 hours later saying they will check on the status and give an update. Its crickets for 3 days.

4/24, we message Tesla on at 9:50am to ask if they got an update from the body shop. They respond pretty quickly this time, about 20 minutes later saying the car came out of paint on Friday and should be ready for pick up at the end of the day 4/25 around 4pm. We inform Tesla we can come pick up the car on Thursday since we will be going out of town. This gives them 2 additional days as a cushion.

We check back on Thursday but let them know that we will be out of town for a week and don't want to rush them and will check back in once we get back into town. The SA says, no problem, enjoy your trip and we will see you when you get back.

We figured it's been almost 2 more weeks our car should be ready to go.

5/12 at 9:06am we send a message to check on the status. It's crickets once again. This time we drive to Tesla in the afternoon to talk to someone in person. A different SA pulls up our info and tells us someone will get back to us the next day.

5/13 comes and we message and continue to get the run around. This continues on until 5/24.

5/25 we finally get a call from a Service Manager apologizing for the poor communication and delay. I ask him what options do we have at this point and he tells me that Tesla can offer to repurchase the vehicle from us or we can keep the vehicle once it's completed and they will offer to make payments on the car for the months we have been delayed.

We decide to just cut our losses on this MYP and are currently in the repurchase process with Tesla.

A few closing notes.

We love the MYP and really enjoy driving it. It still is the best car we have ever owned, even with its quirks and issues we honestly don't know what other car we would buy at this time. We don't want to go back to a gasoline vehicle nor deal with annoying dealerships and their shady business tactics.

Tesla needs to focus some time and energy into their service experience so stuff like this does not happen. The car is amazing, the service process can be great as well but it is currently an issue that needs to be refined and resolved. I understand our situation is a bit unique and most new Tesla owners will not have any issues nor need to open a service ticket, which is a true blessing.

Message me if you have any questions what so ever, don't hesitate to ask and I will try to give my most honest and open feedback.
