Semi rant: I play mostly at church which is fine because the Mrs. is one of the leaders and her bestie is music director. While the song selections seem to live in a certain box (a lot of the same stuff every couple weeks) occasionally i get to play something challenging, so i deal with it.

Lately something has really been grinding my gears: the mix. Im non existent. The issue is the sound guy is a junior college know it all type. Doesnt listen or has excuses for everything. Shows up late (or doesnt show). Doesnt EQ and when he does he doesnt leave it set so its balanced. Sliders are rolled completely off instead of muted and the slid back off “approximately” where they were before between songs. Director has wanted to fire him a million times but “who would replace him?”

Personal gripe: the toms on the drum kit (electronic) are rolled up so high the pianist jokes about getting a butt massage. I get drowned out because he put a frequency duck that drops my bass guitar if im in the same register as the toms, and they want heavy toms for a lot of songs for the rhythm. Anyone who knows anything about toms frequencies knows this absolutely guts bass guitar. When i listen to the streams afterward, even with my personal sound system pegged on the bass, i cant be heard. You can hear vocals and drums, occasionally piano. Its really killing my desire to play. I like playing, i want to play, but the idea of attaching myself to this stuff is wearing on me. Im not here for glory, but its really killing my enthusiasm. Makes me just want to grab my Strat and go ape level distortion just to prove a point. Not sure how to deal with it or what to do about it. Not likely to change soon, or ever. What would you do?
