The new base will allow China to "scoop up electronic communications throughout the southeastern U.S., where many military bases are located, and monitor U.S. ship traffic."
“Establishing this facility signals a new, escalatory phase in China’s broader defense strategy. It’s a bit of a game changer,” Singleton said. “The selection of Cuba is also intentionally provocative.” Outside of that though, the base will also give China access to communications for any Latin American north of the Equator.
Does this signal a return to Cold War politics in the region? Should Latin America support it even though it will significantly increase regional tensions having both China/USA competing in the Caribbean? How will your country react?
