PHOTO Updates: https://imgur.com/a/8Rv1LoZ (I assume the first of many photos to come in the following months)

Last week, I posted one of my life's most embarrassing stories on TIFU, about the typo that caused me to donate $15,041 to a Bangladesh charity instead of the $150 donation I intended. At the time of my Reddit post, the charity’s latest campaign had approximately $12,500 from 26 total donations. My neighbor, the organizer of the charity, had told me the charity was running on fumes and looking to cancel some of its programs.

Of course I had hoped some Redditors might read my story and decide to help the charity, but I NEVER could have expected the overwhelming reaction nor the incredible generosity of the Reddit community. “Watch this post blow up, and a shit ton of Redditors donate” was one of the first comments the post received on Reddit. And that is exactly what happened. Over Memorial Day Weekend, the charity raised over $55,000 from over 2,100 new donations.

On Saturday, I had to explain Reddit to my 77-year-old neighbor and to the charity’s team leader in Bangladesh (he called it Rebbit, as you can see in my pics). They were absolutely blown away by the reaction – truly they view it as a miracle. I received the following message from my neighbor: “Without a doubt, this is the biggest wave of support to arrive since we started! Doors that were closed can now be opened. Plans that were parked can now be put in motion. There is much we can now accomplish. All due to your idea to post (in a funny way) on what happened a while ago. Abundant resources require an equal level of responsibility. No less. I am committed to see that these funds are applied carefully and continue to make a difference to those who need it most.”

Sometimes things just seem to work out for a reason. One Reddit donor commented, “Michael may have screwed up his donation, but hopefully his TIFU on Reddit has fixed that somewhat.” Thanks to Reddit, the Bangladesh community will receive roughly 4x the amount of the original donation I had refunded.

TL;DR: My embarrassing story of an accidental $15,041 donation (and refund of $13,541) goes viral on Reddit, Redditors raise over $55,000 for needy in Bangladesh!

EDIT: Holy cow someone just donated $5,000! Thank you, Anonymous!! Hopefully you didn’t mean to donate $500… it could happen to anyone. Charity link in comments and original post, if anyone else is interested!

I consider myself someone who would never fall for a scam. Well, I guess I’m not as smart as I think because I was taken big time today. May this be a warning to us all. I have been having trouble with my bank over the last few weeks over my credit card being used fraudulently, which has been dealt with through the proper channels. (I’m waiting on my third, I guess now fourth credit card to arrive.) so when I received a call today that there were thousands being charged in another country, I was upset, but not surprised. And it seemed to be handled all so professionally. But it went sideways when the man told me that they had identified two people working in my branch who they needed to confirm as being involved. He had all of my banking info already, and asked that I go to the branch, remove 8k that he had already deposited, and then drive to a store to deposit as bitcoin and from there they would be able to close the “wallet” that was opened under my name. I stupidly did this, and feeling more and more uncomfortable, told him I needed a break because he had me all set up to do it again. I used that time to call the fraud line of my bank and found out it was indeed a scam. I feel such a fool, and have very little money as it is, having had Stage 4 cancer since 2015, and unable to work. Also, before my online banking was shut down, it looks like 17k was removed. I don’t have much to begin with. All I could do was sit in my car and cry. I have no idea what I’m going to do. I hardly have any money left and it’s completely my fault. I’ll never forgive myself. He was so professional and had very reasonable answers to any of my questions. If this story helps even one person, I’ll be happy about that. I even considered unaliving myself so I’m not a burden to my family, and hoping that this cancer comes back with a vengeance. Really sick, unhealthy thinking. I’m not going to do it, so no alarm. But there is a very special place in hell for this man and the myriad of others who prey on the vulnerable. I’ll just keep crying now, and pray that appointments at my bank and the real fraud departments will be able to help. Thank you for reading if you got this far. Stay away from people who call from your bank and ask you to do anything like this.

TL;DR I lost a lot of money in a scam today.

My grandpa surprised me with a brand new switch last year. This was two weeks before he died. The mischievous smile that he had when showing it to me will be forever ingrained in my heart. My grandpa took me in when he noticed how neglectful and abusive my mom was. He just came, packed my bags and sternly told my mom that he is taking me with and my mom didn't argue. It was the happiest day of my life.

He didn't have much but he showered me with so much love. He meant the world to me so that switch had high sentimental value. It was also my very first switch. Anyway I started dating my girlfriend earlier this year. She is my first serious girlfriend and it's been amazing.

We are high school seniors but I could definitely see myself marrying her. About a week ago, she wasn't herself and told me that her grandma was in the hospital and she couldn't go see her because she didn't have any money. It didn't look like her grandma was going to make it and she was afraid that she would die without saying goodbye.

I spent a few days contemplating on how to help her. I didn't get the chance to say goodbye to my own grandpa because I was at school when he died so I know that pain. I gave it a lot of thought then decided that maybe I could sell my switch. It would probably mean everything to my girlfriend. It wasn't an easy choice but I did it then gave her the money.

She told me that she had left and after that I couldn't reach her. I understood that she had a lot going on so I waited for her to contact me. The following day I saw her friend's IG stories. They were at a music festival hanging out with some random guys and my girlfriend was there. I didn't know how to confront her so I just blocked her on everything.

TL:DR I sold a very sentimental item to do something thoughtful for my girlfriend and I regret it.
