I've had this argument many times, but I think the idea of Deckard being a replicate is a fun twist but ultimately ruins the narrative core of the film.

Deckard is a placeholder character that represents the apathy of humanity in this future. People have let the world go to waste, and through a lack of care have let all the real animals die and the environment go to shit. And our treatment of the Replicants is used as the key demonstration of this, despite the fact that these robots are basically indentical to humans in everyway we treat with a complete lack of empathy or care.

So at the climax of the film the "villain", Roy Batty (a Replicant) shows compassion and saves Deckard. He is showing Deckard (and the audience) the importance of life and empathy, and this is a moment of realisation for Deckard. The "robots" are more human than the humans. It's a wake up call that we have to change our ways and is a pivotal lesson/message of the film.

If Deckard is also a Replicant it completely undoes this concept and negates his entire narrative arc.

Child of a freight conductor / engineer.

Not only are road crews on call 24/7, including birthdays, school functions and holidays (though I will note that the company did try to get people home for the bigger ones) but you're also given 2 hours notice when your job is ready. That's 2 hours to squeeze a life into, plus getting ready and commute time. For my family, that meant hurried trips to the grocery store and other errands, events cancelled when the pager went off, plans that we bothered to make abandoned.

Other element for road crews is that after they finish their 8-10 hour shift (which could be much longer if they were stuck in a siding somewhere) they're at the away terminal. Conrail / NS would put their crews up at a seedy motel to rest the legally required 8 hours before sending them home, but if there wasn't any traffic heading back to the home terminal, crews could be stuck there for much longer (though usually after a day or two they'd just rent a van and drive them back). Sometimes my dad would get in at 11 pm, get called at 5am for an 7am job and be gone before we left for school or even woke up, and then be gone for 2 or 3 days after that.

Add in stuff like random banner testing and the company doing as much shady shit as possible to maintain their safety record, living on drive-thru and vending machine food at the away terminals... it was lonely for all of us and especially stressful and unhealthy for my dad. I still remember how quickly he could fall asleep at any moment just because he never knew when he'd get another chance.

Since this post is getting a lot of attention, I want to also take a moment to remind people to never ever EVER try to "beat" a train or go around the crossing arms. It's hard to explain to people who weren't alive or of-age the amount of public support for invading Iraq during this time period, the few who DID speak out against it were labeled as anti-American and dragged through the press. The military didn't have the stigma that it has today and it wasn't seen as a "way out" for those who couldn't get into college or got in trouble with the law.

Corporations want to not only normalize ‘sacrifice’ and ‘hard work’ for blue collar jobs, but they want it to be worn as a badge of pride so the workforce will ‘self-motivate’ and work themselves to death to earn the respect of their peers, when it’s all just an investment-free way for the executives and the corporations to maximize their profits.

I have small children and have also been trying to have a really ‘strong work ethic’ to fulfill managers’ requests and show leadership that I can do it all. I don’t do blue collar work, anymore, but worker bee white collar work is treated the same.

I saw something recently that hit hard and the part of the video about missing his son’s birthday reminded me of it; I didn’t want the entire thing, BTW, but I got to see that part. The post was basically: your managers won’t remember all the nights you worked late, but your kids will.

My oldest is in 4th grade, and it literally feels like last week he was in Kindergarten. My youngest ones are going to be in Pre-K and Kindergarten in the fall, and I can remember the first days home with them from the hospital.

It wasn't a war. It was a massive way for the United States to field test new equipment as well as use it to activate the National Guard/reserves so they could update all of their equipment from Vietnam. The entire Iraq war was a fever dream for contractors and the military industrial complex.

Everybody you know that died over there was for nothing more than greed and their own misplaced trust in the fever of patriotism after 9/11. That is a very hard pill to swallow, its taken me 20 years to choke down that my bad knees, bad hearing and the people that died was all so I could get a bachelors degree for "free". Come to terms with it however you want but stop looking for something deeper it only prolongs the healing. At this point all our war was good for is the Hollywood script mill at this point.

Oh this explanation is super simple and easy to follow. I spent 10 years in the U.S. Army, with deployments to both Afghanistan and Iraq as a combat arms soldier. I did this to buy new cars and more houses for men with already full plates. That’s it, that’s the entire thing. It isn’t convoluted. Being a poor kid with zero prospects, I hoped to use the military to build myself a better life, but all I did was fill the mouths of other men. There’s your reason, there is no good justification, it was simply those with money using those without money to enrich themselves. So you can explain it to yourself, very easily in fact, but the question here is, will you?

There is no reason to continue this dog breed. Pit bulls were bred into existence to bait and bite fucking bears and bulls. When that was banned, they were turned on each-other to fight to the death.

That instinct is still in their blood today. It's not "just bad owners". There are countless examples of pits who go years with zero signs of aggression and just snap one day and maul another animal or a person- it even happens to expert dog trainers and dog behavioral experts. You can't eliminate behavioral instinct just by being a good pet owner.

This is not a breed of dog we need in the 21st century. They serve no utility. They are not working animals. They don't do anything better than any other breed (well, besides mauling people). They contribute to overcrowded shelters and more euthanized animals. And they suffer, themselves- there is still active dog fighting with them today. They're over-bred, and many spend their lives in cages, pounds, and shelters because most sane people aren't willing to adopt them.

It's time to end this. End the breeding. End the suffering. It will end these stories. I know current pit owners will scoff at this, but you can even grandfather in ownership of current animals, and it will be over in a decade. Keep your pibble, enjoy him. If you want to live in ignorance, that's fine. But there is no need to continue breeding them. It's time to move on.
