Rupert’s People
Listen/Download – Rupert’s People – Hold On
Greetings all.
Today’s selection should be familiar to fans of Iron Leg via the smoking version by Sharon Tandy.
Rupert’s People were (like Tandy herself) tangled in the confusing web of the Fluer de Lys, featuring various and sundry members of that band, who also played on Tandy’s 45s of the period.
That said, their version of ‘Hold On’ is an absolute monster.
Featured on the flipside of their hit (much bigger in the UK, Canada and Australia but actually getting some play and a release here in the US) the Procol Harum-ish ‘The Reflections of Charles Brown’ (which was covered in the US by Mickey Buckins and the New Breed), the Rupert’s People version of ‘Hold On’ is a full on freakbeat explosion, with heavy guitars and wailing organ.
The arrangement is much heavier than Tandy’s, though there’s really no replacement for her particularly sexy delivery.
Rupert’s People only released a handful of tracks while they were together, but these and some associated cuts were compiled and reissued in the early 2000s by Circle Records.
I hope you dig the track, and I’ll see you all next week.
See you next week.
Peace
Larry
