Bhavish Aggarwal, CEO and Founder of Ola has launched a new company called Krutrim SI Designs. The firm was registered in Bengaluru on April 5, 2023, with an initial capital of ₹1 lakh, as per data from the Ministry of Corporate Affairs.



What Happened? First revealed in a BQ Prime report, Bhavish Aggarwal and Krishnamurthy Venugopala Tenneti, a longtime associate, are the only two directors of Krutrim.



In addition to Krutrim, both Aggarwal and Tenneti serve as directors for ANI Technologies, the parent company of multiple Ola group companies, such as Ola Financial Services, Ola Electric Charging, Ola Electric Technologies, and Ola Electric Mobility.

The specific purpose of Krutrim remains undisclosed. However, according to a separate report by the Economic Times, the company could potentially venture into artificial intelligence.



There&#8217;s speculation that Matrix Partners, an early investor in Ola Cabs, may be funding this new AI venture. Over the years, Aggarwal and Matrix Partners have maintained a strong business relationship, with the latter investing in the initial phases of all Ola group companies. Matrix also invested in Avail Finance, a company once run by Aggarwal&#8217;s brother Ankush Aggarwal and later acquired by Ola Cabs.



Of late, Aggarwal has expressed keen interest in AI, regularly tweeting about it and urging India to take the lead in adopting AI technologies. ET&#8217;s sources also reveal that Aggarwal recently visited Taiwan, known as a key hub for chips used in AI computing systems.

Indian startups have seen a significant drop in funding in the first five months of 2023, receiving only a fifth of the investments they did during the same period last year.



What Happened? Per a MoneyControl report, data from Venture Intelligence reveals that venture capital and private equity funding fell by 79% to $3.3 billion (₹27,164 crore) from last year&#8217;s $15.7 billion (₹1,29,232 crore). Furthermore, the number of funding rounds decreased to 247 from 613 in 2022.



May 2023 saw investors take part in around 53 funding rounds, putting in about $948 million (₹7,805 crore). This is a significant decrease from the $1.68 billion (₹13,830 crore) across 108 funding rounds in May 2022. The number of deals saw an even sharper decline, dropping by more than half compared to the same month last year.



There was a slight increase in funding from April to May 2023, from $342 million (₹2,815 crore) across 46 deals, but these figures are still below 2022 levels.

Investments in growth and late-stage startups also felt the squeeze. From January to May 2023, such startups secured $2.75 billion (₹22,635 crore) across 105 deals, a significant drop from the average of $8.9 billion (₹73,256 crore) across 189 deals in 2022.



Prashanth Prakash, founding partner at Accel, expects an increase in mergers and acquisitions in the coming months, as he predicts a funding drought for late-stage startups lasting up to 10 months.



In the first five months of 2023, 142 early-stage deals brought in $549 million (₹4,520 crore), which is a 54% drop from the average number of deals last year, and a 56% decrease in the amount of funding.

Apple supplier Foxconn plans to start manufacturing iPhones in Karnataka by April 2024, according to a statement by the state government.



What Happened? Per a Reuters report, the state government has committed to providing land for the factory to Foxconn by July 1. The project, which has a value of $1.59 billion (₹13,090 crore), could potentially create around 50,000 jobs.



Foxconn, the leading contract electronics manufacturer globally, aims to manufacture 20 million iPhones annually at this <a href="https://in.benzinga.com/content/32307966/apple-manufacturer-foxconn-secures-300-acre-karnataka-land-as-push-towards-india-continues">new facility located in Devanahalli</a>, near Bengaluru, the state&#8217;s capital and tech hub.



Per a report from mid-April, Foxconn is also looking to <a href="https://in.benzinga.com/content/31881288/iphone-maker-ramps-up-production-efforts-in-chennai-to-keep-up-with-apples-growing-ambitions">establish a research and development (R&amp;D) centre in Bengaluru's Whitefield</a>, indicating its rapid capacity expansion in India. In March, Foxconn Chairman Young Liu marked his second visit to India in less than a year when he highlighted India as being key to the company&#8217;s longer-term vision.

It is worth noting that Apple has been gradually <a href="https://in.benzinga.com/content/32232463/apples-india-focus-sees-record-march-quarter-growth-powering-global-revenue-surge">moving its production away from China</a>. Strict COVID-related restrictions in China have disrupted the manufacturing of new iPhones and other Apple devices. Additionally, the iPhone maker is taking steps to protect its business from the ongoing political tensions between Beijing and Washington.
