I feel like discussion about the films rarely mentions the talent of Ian Holm as Bilbo in the Fellowship. Granted, in the scheme of the trilogy it is a smaller part, but as a part of the inciting events his role is so important. The way Ian Holm portrays Bilbo is so deftly done. Highlights for me include his change of voice for the line ‘I’m old Gandalf’, and ‘I’m sorry for everything’. These lines capture so much of what the ring has done and meant to him over his time as ring bearer and sets up wonderful foreshadowing of what it will come to mean for Frodo. The guilt of bringing, however innocently, such an evil item into the possession of his kin, the feeling of being ‘thin’. Those ideas however subtle, always felt so important to the film as a reader of the books, they mark such a change from the hopeful and bouncy Bilbo from the Hobbit.

Anyway, I just wondered if anyone else felt the same?
