Hey,
I really enjoy creating masterposts and that’s why here’s another one.
So, self care is important for all of us, not matter if you are suffering with a mental health issue or not.
And all of us mess up with self care sometimes but it’s especially hard when you have a mental illness.
It’s like an endless cycle. You’re feeling bad because of your illness and forget about your self care, which leads to feeling even worse.
That’s why here’s a list for you!
Sleep
I am sure you already heard about this before but try to sleep at least 8 hours a day.
Your body needs rest because fighting an illness, - no matter which one- is super tiring and what cures the exhausting the best is sleep.
So, try to sleep at least 8 hours.
If you are suffering with depression, borderline, schizophrenia or an eating disorder you might need even more sleep.
But you can try out yourself how much sleep your body needs, because every body is different.
Get Out Of Bed
This is a tough one, isn’t it?
But getting out of bed is one of the most important things to do.
Try to make your bed, take a shower, brush your teeth, pin your hair up and treat yourself with a scented body butter.
And change your clothes. You don’t need to get fancy, but please don’t stay in your pyjamas all day long.
You’ll feel way better after changing.
Meals
Okay, eating might be hard even if you’re not suffering with an eating disorder, because people having a mental illness tend to lose their sense of what a healthy amount of food is.
If you are housing with your family, friends or someone else you can ask someone to keep a watch on your intake.
Make also sure that you are eating nutritional foods but don’t forget to have a bar of chocolate or what ever you like as well.
Oh, and please drink enough water!
Go Outside
I know, it’s hard but try to go outside. The sun rays contain vitamin d, a hormone, which helps beating depression and similar disorders.
Go out, read a book or go for a walk.
Or open a window and breath in some fresh air.
Keep In Touch
Talk to someone. Call your old friend, text your mum, go and visit your grandma or just go and sit down in a café.
Hobbys
Especially people with depression and borderline loose interest in their hobbys.
But there are so many things you can do.
Read a book, listen to a bunch of happy songs, learn an instrument, draw something, write a journal or a book, bake, play video games, dress up, organize your life etc.
Design your own schedule
Try to create a routine. You can buy a bullet journal and plan your week.
This will make self care more easy.
You can see what you managed to do every day and you can see what you still need to do as well.
( If you need to take any meds you can list them for example and in this way you can make sure that you’re taking them)
Listen To Your Body
Try to listen to your body. What do you need?
You can try out meditation or just quiz yourself.
After knowing you can try to pamper yourself.
If you are stressed go for a hot bath, if you are tired sleep etc.
You can also do sports, but please listen to your body. If you don’t feel like doing sports than don’t.
Feel free to add more!
