Cuz I don’t like LeBron James. I like Michael Jordan much better. But I’d go up to LeBron James, it doesn’t matter. I’d say, “LeBron, did you ever have any desire to be a woman?” because what I’d love you to do is star on my team that I’m building up. I will have the greatest team in history. They’ll never lose. Nobody will come within 70 points of this team and we have to change that and we have to make it okay to talk about it. You know, the young lady I was talking about is afraid to talk about it. She’s shunned and she’s canceled when she talks about it. This is crazy, right Kellyanne?

Sources say that the Mavericks, however, have long understood that any chance of actually pursuing a Dončić-and-James pairing would likely require James to take the lead in actively forcing his way to Dallas. The concept predates Dallas’ acquisition of Irving from Brooklyn, going back to when the Lakers were struggling and it appeared James might be getting restless.

Yet no such trade push, with James and his family so settled in Southern California, has ever appeared closed to materializing.

Amid a belief in various corners of the league that Dallas would prefer to sign Irving to the most team-friendly deal that the sides can agree upon, Irving's value to the Mavericks theoretically increases if his ability to recruit is factored in — especially given the Mavericks' well-documented struggles in free agency for years despite Mark Cuban's reputation of as one of the NBA's most player-friendly owners.

Sources say that Dallas has not wavered from its hope and intent to re-sign Irving in free agency and pursue further potential win-now roster upgrades via trade packages built around the 10th overall pick in the June 22 draft.

The expectation likewise persists, meanwhile, that the Lakers will prioritize re-signing restricted free agents Austin Reaves and Rui Hachimura once the market opens. There has been no indication since the trade deadline that they have any interest in pursuing Irving in free agency to reunite him with James in Los Angeles.

Yet two sources close to the process insisted Monday that Irving has consistently expressed a desire to remain a Maverick and actually wants to shut down the notion that he’s angling to get to L.A.

“He wants to stay,” said one source.

After three full seasons on the job, all Karnisovas & Co. have to show for it is rebuilding the Bulls back to mediocrity with limited future draft assets and a salary-cap ceiling that doesn’t match the underachieving talent.

Project “Blow Up” is not an option, according to Karnisovas, who seems fine with staying on the path of continuity. The organization is content to hold out hope for a miraculous Lonzo Ball recovery from three surgeries on his left knee, while beginning negotiations on Nikola Vucevic’s contract extension over the last week. The Bulls are looking to lock up the big man for the next three years.

Big swings aren’t in the summer forecast.

Yet I'm also told that they plan to gauge Jeff Van Gundy’s interest in a potential return to the bench as an aide to Kidd after 15-plus years in broadcasting. The ESPN analyst is, of course, in the midst of working the NBA Finals.

Van Gundy hasn't coached in the NBA since the 2006-07 season with Houston. But the former Knicks and Rockets coach did serve as head coach of USA Basketball's 2017 FIBA AmeriCup team and its 2019 World Cup qualifying team largely featuring players from the G League. Gregg Popovich then made Van Gundy an assistant coach on the team of NBA stars that won the 2020 Tokyo Olympics contested in 2021.
