In this video, I discuss Parkinson's disease---the second most common neurodegenerative disease behind Alzheimer's disease. Parkinson's disease is associated with the degeneration and death of dopamine neurons in the substantia nigra. The substantia nigra is a region of the brain that is part of a collection of structures known as the basal ganglia, which are important to movement. Parkinson's disease patients experience severe movement difficulties that become more problematic as the degeneration of substantia nigra neurons becomes more extensive. The most common treatment for Parkinson's disease involves the administration of L-DOPA, a precursor to dopamine that allows the brain to synthesize more of the neurotransmitter to replenish depleted dopamine levels.

Welcome to 2 minute neuroscience, where I simplistically explain neuroscience topics in 2 minutes or less. In this installment I will discuss Parkinson’s disease.
Parkinson’s disease is considered a neurodegenerative disease because it involves the degeneration and death of neurons. It is most frequently seen in adults over the age of 50.
The most recognizable symptoms of Parkinson’s initially are movement-related and generally involve a tremor that is worse when a person is at rest, bradykinesia, which is slowness of movement, rigidity, and postural impairment. Parkinson’s patients also often experience non-motor symptoms like cognitive impairment or psychiatric symptoms. The causes of Parkinson’s are not fully understood, but a combination of genetic and environmental factors is likely involved.
Parkinson’s patients have low levels of the neurotransmitter dopamine in the basal ganglia, a group of structures involved with movement (among other functions). These low dopamine levels in the basal ganglia are caused by the death of dopamine neurons in a region of the basal ganglia called the substantia nigra. The substantia nigra has high numbers of dopamine neurons, but by the end stages of Parkinson’s patients have often lost more than half of the dopamine neurons in this region.
The most common treatment for Parkinson’s involves an attempt to restore depleted dopamine levels in the basal ganglia. Because dopamine does not cross the blood-brain barrier, dopamine cannot simply be administered to a patient. Instead, however, patients can be given a precursor to dopamine called L-DOPA. L-DOPA can cross the blood-brain barrier and is used by the brain to synthesize more dopamine. This can lead to improvement in the motor symptoms of Parkinson’s, but L-DOPA does not halt the neurodegeneration that occurs in parkinson’s disease, and long-term use of L-DOPA can cause a number of side effects, including movement-related problems. So it is not a cure for the disease and other treatments are still being explored.

Mucuna pruriens
Mucuna pruriens is a tropical legume native to Africa and tropical Asia and widely naturalized and cultivated. Its English common names include velvet bean, Bengal velvet bean, Florida velvet bean, Mauritius velvet bean, Yokohama velvet bean, cowage, cowitch, lacuna bean, Lyon bean, Donkey eye, monkey tamarind, and Buffalo beans (the last also refers to Thermopsis rhombifolia). The plant is notorious for the extreme itchiness it produces on contact, particularly with the young foliage and the seed pods. It has value in agricultural and horticultural use and has a range of medicinal properties.
Description
The plant is an annual climbing shrub with long vines that can reach over 15 m in length. When the plant is young, it is almost completely covered with fuzzy hairs, but when older, it is almost completely free of hairs. The leaves are tripinnate, ovate, reverse ovate, rhombus-shaped or widely ovate. The sides of the leaves are often heavily grooved and the tips are pointy. In young M.pruriens plants, both sides of the leaves have hairs. The stems of the leaflets are two to three millimeters long. Additional adjacent leaves are present and are about 5 mm long.

Parkinson's disease is associated with the degeneration and death of dopamine neurons in the substantia nigra. The substantia nigra is a region of the brain that is part of a collection of structures known as the basal ganglia, which are important to movement. Parkinson's disease patients experience severe movement difficulties that become more problematic as the degeneration of substantia nigra neurons becomes more extensive. The most common treatment for Parkinson's disease involves the administration of L-DOPA, a precursor to dopamine that allows the brain to synthesize more of the neurotransmitter to replenish depleted dopamine levels. TRANSCRIPT: Welcome to 2 minute neuroscience, where I simplistically explain neuroscience topics in 2 minutes or less. In this installment I will discuss Parkinson’s disease. Parkinson’s disease is considered a neurodegenerative disease because it involves the degeneration and death of neurons. It is most frequently seen in adults over the age of 50. The most recognizable symptoms of Parkinson’s initially are movement-related and generally involve a tremor that is worse when a person is at rest, bradykinesia, which is slowness of movement, rigidity, and postural impairment. Parkinson’s patients also often experience non-motor symptoms like cognitive impairment or psychiatric symptoms. The causes of Parkinson’s are not fully understood, but a combination of genetic and environmental factors is likely involved. Parkinson’s patients have low levels of the neurotransmitter dopamine in the basal ganglia, a group of structures involved with movement (among other functions). These low dopamine levels in the basal ganglia are caused by the death of dopamine neurons in a region of the basal ganglia called the substantia nigra. The substantia nigra has high numbers of dopamine neurons, but by the end stages of Parkinson’s patients have often lost more than half of the dopamine neurons in this region. The most common treatment for Parkinson’s involves an attempt to restore depleted dopamine levels in the basal ganglia. Because dopamine does not cross the blood-brain barrier, dopamine cannot simply be administered to a patient. Instead, however, patients can be given a precursor to dopamine called L-DOPA. L-DOPA can cross the blood-brain barrier and is used by the brain to synthesize more dopamine. This can lead to improvement in the motor symptoms of Parkinson’s, but L-DOPA does not halt the neurodegeneration that occurs in parkinson’s disease, and long-term use of L-DOPA can cause a number of side effects, including movement-related problems. So it is not a cure for the disease and other treatments are still being explored. -

Brain Chemical Messengers
The exciting discoveries began in the spring of 1977. Tools had been discovered. Tools that were enabling scientists to penetrate the very interior of single nerve cells in the brain. Important discoveries were being made almost daily about the inner workings of the brain. We now know that vital chemicals carry messages between brain cells. In essence, they allow brain cells to "talk to" one another.
On a typical day in the brain, trillions of messages are sent and received. But when too much stress is placed on the brain, the Happy Messengers begin to fall behind on their deliveries. As the stress continues, the happy messages begin to fail. Important nerve centers then receive mostly SAD MESSAGES, and the whole brain becomes distressed. The person enters a state of brain chemical imbalance known as -- OVERSTRESS.
OVERSTRESS makes people feel terrible. With SAD MESSAGES overwhelming the happy messages, a person feels "overwhelmed" by life. The exciting discoveries began in the spring of 1977. Tools had been discovered. Tools that were enabling scientists to penetrate the very interior of single nerve cells in the brain. Parkinson's disease is associated with the degeneration and death of dopamine neurons in the substantia nigra. The substantia nigra is a region of the brain that is part of a collection of structures known as the basal ganglia, which are important to movement. Parkinson's disease patients experience severe movement difficulties that become more problematic as the degeneration of substantia nigra neurons becomes more extensive. The most common treatment for Parkinson's disease involves the administration of L-DOPA, a precursor to dopamine that allows the brain to synthesize more of the neurotransmitter to replenish depleted dopamine levels.

Welcome to 2 minute neuroscience, where I simplistically explain neuroscience topics in 2 minutes or less. In this installment I will discuss Parkinson’s disease.
Parkinson’s disease is considered a neurodegenerative disease because it involves the degeneration and death of neurons. It is most frequently seen in adults over the age of 50.
The most recognizable symptoms of Parkinson’s initially are movement-related and generally involve a tremor that is worse when a person is at rest, bradykinesia, which is slowness of movement, rigidity, and postural impairment. Parkinson’s patients also often experience non-motor symptoms like cognitive impairment or psychiatric symptoms. The causes of Parkinson’s are not fully understood, but a combination of genetic and environmental factors is likely involved.
Parkinson’s patients have low levels of the neurotransmitter dopamine in the basal ganglia, a group of structures involved with movement (among other functions). These low dopamine levels in the basal ganglia are caused by the death of dopamine neurons in a region of the basal ganglia called the substantia nigra. The substantia nigra has high numbers of dopamine neurons, but by the end stages of Parkinson’s patients have often lost more than half of the dopamine neurons in this region.
The most common treatment for Parkinson’s involves an attempt to restore depleted dopamine levels in the basal ganglia. Because dopamine does not cross the blood-brain barrier, dopamine cannot simply be administered to a patient. Instead, however, patients can be given a precursor to dopamine called L-DOPA. L-DOPA can cross the blood-brain barrier and is used by the brain to synthesize more dopamine. This can lead to improvement in the motor symptoms of Parkinson’s, but L-DOPA does not halt the neurodegeneration that occurs in parkinson’s disease, and long-term use of L-DOPA can cause a number of side effects, including movement-related problems. So it is not a cure for the disease and other treatments are still being explored.

In this video, I discuss Parkinson's disease---the second most common neurodegenerative disease behind Alzheimer's disease. Parkinson's disease is associated with the degeneration and death of dopamine neurons in the substantia nigra. The substantia nigra is a region of the brain that is part of a collection of structures known as the basal ganglia, which are important to movement. Parkinson's disease patients experience severe movement difficulties that become more problematic as the degeneration of substantia nigra neurons becomes more extensive. The most common treatment for Parkinson's disease involves the administration of L-DOPA, a precursor to dopamine that allows the brain to synthesize more of the neurotransmitter to replenish depleted dopamine levels.

Welcome to 2 minute neuroscience, where I simplistically explain neuroscience topics in 2 minutes or less. In this installment I will discuss Parkinson’s disease.
Parkinson’s disease is considered a neurodegenerative disease because it involves the degeneration and death of neurons. It is most frequently seen in adults over the age of 50.
The most recognizable symptoms of Parkinson’s initially are movement-related and generally involve a tremor that is worse when a person is at rest, bradykinesia, which is slowness of movement, rigidity, and postural impairment. Parkinson’s patients also often experience non-motor symptoms like cognitive impairment or psychiatric symptoms. The causes of Parkinson’s are not fully understood, but a combination of genetic and environmental factors is likely involved.
Parkinson’s patients have low levels of the neurotransmitter dopamine in the basal ganglia, a group of structures involved with movement (among other functions). These low dopamine levels in the basal ganglia are caused by the death of dopamine neurons in a region of the basal ganglia called the substantia nigra. The substantia nigra has high numbers of dopamine neurons, but by the end stages of Parkinson’s patients have often lost more than half of the dopamine neurons in this region.
The most common treatment for Parkinson’s involves an attempt to restore depleted dopamine levels in the basal ganglia. Because dopamine does not cross the blood-brain barrier, dopamine cannot simply be administered to a patient. Instead, however, patients can be given a precursor to dopamine called L-DOPA. L-DOPA can cross the blood-brain barrier and is used by the brain to synthesize more dopamine. This can lead to improvement in the motor symptoms of Parkinson’s, but L-DOPA does not halt the neurodegeneration that occurs in parkinson’s disease, and long-term use of L-DOPA can cause a number of side effects, including movement-related problems. So it is not a cure for the disease and other treatments are still being explored.

Mucuna also stimulates the production of melatonin and serotonin which are both necessary for sleep regulation. These brain chemicals are also produced in the pineal gland. Brain chemicals are the key to a good night’s sleep and the keys to a youthful life at any age. Es mag nicht verwundern, daß man von dieser Substanz noch nie etwas gehört hat. Nikotinamid-Adenin-Dinucleotid-Hydrid (NADH) ist biologischer Wasserstoff, welcher mit dem biologischen Sauerstoff jeder Zelle reagiert und dort Energie freisetzt. Und dieser Prozeß findet in jeder Zelle, in jedem Gewebe und jedem Organ statt. Die höchste Konzentration ist im Herz zu finden, das an einem Tag etwa 85.000 Herzschläge durchführt. Ein energiebedürftiger Prozeß.
NADH ist das wichtigste aller Coenzyme und wird deshalb auch Coenzym 1 genannt. Es steigert die im Rahmen der Verstoffwechslung der Nährstoffe entstehende Produktion von ATP in der Zelle. Das Energie übertragende Biomolekül NADH ist verantwortlich für die letzte und alles entscheidende Stufe der sogenannten Zellatmung, also des sauerstoffabhängigen (aeroben) Energiestoffwechsels.
NADH ist damit eingebunden in das antioxidative Verteidigungssystem des Körpers gegen freie Radikale, die allerlei Krankheiten verursachen können. Univ.-Prof. Dr. Dr. George Birkmayer ist der Sohn von Walther Birkmayer – dem Entdecker der klassischen Therapie gegen Parkinson mit L-Dopa. Der Sohn führte die Forschungen des Vaters weiter und fand heraus, daß die für Parkinson verantwortlichen Zellprozesse einhergehen mit NADH. Gelingt es durch dosierte Zuführung, den NADH-Haushalt im Körper zu stabilisieren, hebt dieser Zustand nahezu die Symptome eines Parkinsonpatienten auf, da dieser durch die Regulierung des NADH-Gehalts vermehrt Dopamin ausschüttet.
Der Neurotransmitter Dopamin oxidiert im Körper spontan. Diesen Vorgang nennt man Autooxidation. Die während dieses Vorgangs gebildeten Stoffe sind toxisch. Durch sie können bestimmte Teile des Gehirns beschädigt werden. Bei älteren Personen kommt es wesentlich häufiger zu autooxidativen Prozessen. Da NADH in der Lage ist, die Autooxidation von Dopamin zu hemmen, könnte es zur Verminderung oxidativ schädigender Prozesse im Gehirn nützlich sein.
Der Botenstoff Dopamin ist allgemein bekannt für die sogenannten „Glücksgefühle“. Bereits Walther Birkmayer erkannte Anfang der 60er Jahre bei seinen Parkinsonpatienten eine häufige Gemeinsamkeit: Depression. Eine direkte Zuführung von L-Dopa führte nicht nur zu einer Linderung des physischen Leiden, sondern auch zu einem emotional stabilieren Zustand.
Für ein ehrliches Gesundheitswesen wäre die Forschung und Anwendung von NADH in der täglichen medizinischen Praxis nicht wegzudenken.
