It just seems like any time someone talks about it, they're trying to put disrespect on the teams, mostly LeBron and the Lakers, but if they're favorite team won that championship then they'd probably be saying something different.

If anything, winning the 'bubble chip' is an accomplishment.

  1. This is something none of the players in the 2020 rosters have dealt with before. They haven't went through a pandemic and having to deal with that, while also still worrying about basketball. That alone is enough to affect a players mind and play.

  2. The players were literally segregated to one portion of a building, seeing the same people day in and day out, doing nothing but sitting there, watching videos or training. They had no physical contact with anyone outside of there; not friends, not families, not even the other team until play time. That also affects players mental and abilities.

  3. There were no fans. Players and teams literally thrive off the energy from courts and teams. Having no fans, having nothing but empty arenas and people on a screen is a big shift in what they've been doing their whole time playing in the NBA. That change alone is enough to affect their play.

  4. There's no traveling. There's no home games, there's no way games, there's no going to clubs or restaurants, there's no going to the store, there's no going anywhere.

  5. The constant testing they had to do could also play an affect on them. Not to mention the constant worry for their families/friends they aren't around or even for themselves while playing.

There's just lots of reasons, some I'm not remembering atm but possibly add them on when I think of them. It's just interesting how people discredit this so much. Every team had to go through the same things, no other teams could persevere through it besides 2. While the outsiders and fans are looking in, hanging around their friends or families quarantining, smoking, drinking, ordering food, watching the games (at least those that watched it since it was one of the lowest viewed finales series), these people were literally subjected to the same quarantine but were around a bunch of guys and the opposite team the whole time, being unable to even move around outside of their selected places. We were around our families, a lot of us were still around our friends even tho we shouldn't have been, these players didn't have that socializing aspect that we had, even if they were around their team. It's like constantly being at your job 24/7 opposed to constantly being at home 24/7 like a lot of us were.

Nobody knew what was going to happen with the whole pandemic stuff either so that plays another psychology factor on these players. And NBA is definitely not the only sport to have went through this; literally every sport and every team has been affected by it.

But yet 2 teams still persevered through all of it, things they had to actively adjust to and do, where most of the other teams couldn't, they did, and they went to the finales.

The Celtics top 7 players in terms of minutes played in the playoffs have all received an All-Defense vote at least once in the past 5 seasons.

PlayerYears Receiving All-Defense Votes
Marcus Smart'15, '16, '17, '18, '19, '20, '21,'22, '23
Al Horford'10, '11, '15, '16, '18, '19, '22
Jaylen Brown'18, '19, '20, '21, '22, '23
Derrick White'19, '22, '23
Jayson Tatum'20, '22
Robert Williams'22
Malcolm Brogdon'19

Bolded years indicate the player was named 1st or 2nd team all defense that season.

I know the All-Defense vote isn't the best way to measure defensive greatness (Chris Paul managed to get a vote this year), but most of the years above the guy in questioned got 1st team votes, and they all pass the eye test on defense. Any way you look at it, the Celtics have 7 guys that are plus defenders, and they have the best "weakest" defender of any team in recent memory.

Last year, the Celtics were 2nd in defensive rating in the regular season and were 3rd in defensive rating in the playoffs. This season, they were 3rd in defensive rating in the regular season and have more good/great/elite defenders than any team in the league. They should THE best defense right now and yet they are currently 10th in defensive rating for the playoffs.

Is Boston's defensive problems in the playoffs just because of an inexperienced coach? Is Philly just THAT good on offense with a hobbled Embiid and an aging Harden? Are the Celtics just running out of gas from a long playoff run last year that's finally catching up? All of the above? Or something else entirely?

I did not think the Sixers to be up 3-2 on the Celtics and while the series isn’t over, they’ve certainly performed better than I expected. One of the reasons the Celtics find themselves down 3-2 is that they don’t have a consistent answer for the Sixers' PnR.

In game 1 Harden shredded the Celtics’ defense in the PnR.

1st clip: The Celtics are running a drop coverage and Horford does his job helping contain dribble penetration but Harden with his strength and size is able to shoot over White.

2nd clip: Here the screen is set further out since Smart is pressuring the ball. Smart tries to go over the screen to stay attached but Harden keeps Smart on his hip. Smart isn’t able to get back in front until Harden is just outside the restricted area.

3rd clip: As always when you run a deep drop, you leave your defense vulnerable to pull up 3s.

4th clip: Celtics adjust by putting Horford on Tucker. Since Tucker isn’t a threat to score, the Celtics don’t have to worry about the roll man but Horford still conceded too much room on the drop as Harden hits another 3.

What adjustments did the Celtics make?

1st clip: The Celtics brought a 3rd defender to help. With White sitting at the nail to help Harden can’t get the dribble penetration he had in game 1 and it allows the Celtics to have multiple bodies ready for Embiid when he catches the ball there.

2nd clip: The other adjustment was putting Brown on Harden and icing the ball screen. It’s a bit harder for Harden to be physical with a defender like Brown and icing ball screens to force Harden toward the sideline and preferably to his right.

How did the Sixers respond?

NYC's own Nas said it best "Destroy and Rebuild" and the past few years would certainly prove that sentiment if your a Knicks fan. After being spun in free agency by Kyrie and Kevin Durant, the New York Knicks decided to build from the draft and focus on small deals and star players. Other than the 2017 and 2018 draft which saw the Knicks draft Kevin Knox #9 and Frank Ntilikina #8 respectfully, the Knicks have hit on RJ Barrett, Obi Toppin, and Mitchell Robinson. The Knicks also got crafty in the 2020 draft day deal which ultimately landed them Immanuel Quickley later on in that year.

The addition of Jalen Brunson is lowkey the best free agent signing from last summer (4yrs/106MIL) imo. I thought the Knicks got ripped off and at the price tag was going to be 20 plus a night scorer with no substance or leadership. Boi was I wrong the way Brunson runs the point is nostalgist, he can score on all three levels, and can control the tempo of any game. On top of all that he is a lefty with a killer deamenor. Randle is gritty and improved on his 3 point shot and percentages. Julius Randle along side Mitchell Robinson is a problem and will give any front court pair in the East nightmares. RJ Barret has been inconsistent but his a dawg and with another year of seasoning could potentially be a All Star or atleast make a All Defensive team. With Grimes, Obi, Quickley, and now Hartenstein the Knicks role players are dependable and more consistent. Josh Hart is a great addition and can also be used a spark coming off the bench.

Knicks need a 3-D player desperately. Looking at the roster the Knicks have no wing presence what's so ever. I could see why the Knicks offered so many draft picks for OG Anunoby if those rumors were true this past trade deadline. Package up Fournier and whoever and get a proper 3-D player. I like the Knicks roster and they have a bright future but that's the only hole I see in the Knicks as presently constructed. This season is already a success cause the Knicks overachieved again this year.
