Cox Plate Information

The 2023 Cox Plate - a 2040m Group One WFA for 3YOs & Upwards - will be held at Moonee Valley Racecourse on Saturday the 23rd of October 2023. Punters has all the Cox Plate 2023 details: Tips, betting, odds, form, field, race time details.

The Cox Plate - also known as the 'weight-for-age championship of Australia' - is one of the highlights of the Australian racing calendar. As Australia's richest WFA race it always attracts the best horses in the land - not to mention the quality gallopers that come from distant shores. The tight-turning Moonee Valley circuit only adds to the spectacle, making it an extremely tactical race that begins in earnest at the 800m pole. It is a truly unique fixture on the racing calendar and one of the most loved races for spectators and competitors alike.

The W.S. Cox Plate will often be the main target of a given horse's Spring campaign; however, some push on to the Melbourne Cup. The last horse to achieve success in both races in the same season was none other than three-time Melbourne Cup winner Makybe Diva, which shows the calibre of horse required to complete the feat.

The final W.S. Cox Plate field will be announced in the week of the race.

Key lead-up races: Caulfield Stakes, Turnbull Stakes, Underwood Stakes, Epsom Handicap (less so in recent years)

Cox Plate History

The Cox Plate began life all the way back in 1922, when Violoncello romped to victory. It was named in honour of William Samuel Cox, a pioneer in Australian thoroughbred racing and the founder of the Moonee Valley Racing Club. The race has taken place at Moonee Valley every year since then, and the prize money has been climbing steadily north during that time. It has risen to $5 million for 2018 and Moonee Valley Racing Club chairman Don Casboult called that news “tremendous”.

“This prizemoney increase is a significant boost for our great race and ensures that the Cox Plate remains the pinnacle of Australian racing,” he said. “The Cox Plate Honour Roll features the greatest horses we have seen race in Australia over the past 97 years. As we move towards the 100th running of the Ladbrokes Cox Plate in 2020, the club has been committed to securing this uplift to prize money to ensure we continue to attract the best horses from Australia and overseas.”

He is not wrong when he says that the Cox Plate has crowned the greatest horses ever seen in Australia. The legendary Phar Lap, the third highest stakes-winner in the world at the time, won back-to-back races in 1930 and 1931, and Young Idea and Beau Vite replicated that achievement in the 1930s and 1940s. In the early 1980s, Kingston Town embarked on a stunning period of dominance. He won three Cox Plates in a row, and during that time he was named Australian Champion Racehorse of the Year, seizing another 11 Group One races during a glittering career.

More recent winners include the fabled Makybe Diva in 2005. She became the first horse to win three consecutive Melbourne Cups, from 2003-2005 and capped a glorious career by winning the Cox Plate in comfortable fashion, despite being caught eight horses wide on the home turn. New Zealand superstar So You Think won the 2009 and 2010 Cox Plates with some fantastic performances. But all of these leading lights pale in comparison to Winx.

One of the most famous runnings of the race was in 1986 when Bonecrusher and Our Waverley Star fought out the finish. Both horses commenced their runs at the 800m pole, clearing out from their rivals and racing side by side most of the way to the line. As for who won, perhaps race caller Bill Collins summed it up best when saying:

"100m out, Bonecrusher and Our Waverley Star, stride for stride, there's nothing in it...Our Waverley Star the rails, Bonecrusher the outside...And Bonecrusher races into equine immortality!" Bill Collins (Race Caller), 1986 Cox Plate.

However, all past results no matter how great, have been eclipsed by the effort of Chris Waller's mighty mare Winx, who won a record four consecutive Cox Plates from 2015 to 2018. Her victory over Hartnell in sodden conditions in 2016 was one for the ages, although she faced a tougher battle against second-placed Humidor the following year.

The historic 2018 Cox Plate was won by the mighty mare Winx, who comfortably extended away from a game Benbatl, with Humidor rounding out the placings. The win saw the Chris Waller-trained mare pass Kingston Town for the most amount of Cox Plate wins.

Notable winners: Winx, So You Think, Maldivian, El Segundo, Fields of Omagh, Makybe Diva, Savabeel, Northerly, Sunline, Might and Power, Saintly, Octagonal, Super Impose, Better Loosen Up, Rubiton, Bonecrusher, Kingston Town, Dulcify, Surround, Gunsynd, Tobin Bronze, Tulloch, Redcraze, Rising Fast, Hydrogen, Flight, Tranquil Star, Beau Vite, Ajax, Chatham and of course Phar Lap.
