Every Sunday morning, Hollywood studios release estimated weekend grosses for their movies. Those estimates are usually close to right — unless they have a huge hit or a huge miss on their hands.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie falls in the first category. Sunday estimates for the April 14-16 weekend showed the Illumination and Universal movie earning a jaw-dropping $87 million in its second weekend, besting Frozen II to score the best sophomore outing of all time for an animated film and the ninth best of any movie, not adjusted for inflation.
If that weren’t impressive enough, traffic on Sunday was bigger than expected. By Monday morning, final weekend numbers showed the movie actually taking in $92.5 million, the seventh-biggest second weekend of all time, according to Comscore.
And Super Mario fell a scant 37 percent to score the fourth-best sophomore hold ever a movie opening to $100 million behind Top Gun: Maverick (-...

The 22nd edition of NYC’s Tribeca Film Festival appears to have star power to spare, with Michael Shannon, John Slattery, Chelsea Peretti, David Duchovny, Jennifer Esposito, Randall Park, real-life couple Hamish Linklater and Lily Rabe and Steve Buscemi among those with new films premiering among the 100-plus features screening this year from June 7 through June 18.
A few interesting stats: There are 43 first-time directors and 29 directors returning to Tribeca with their latest projects. 41% of all feature films are directed by women and, for the first time, more than half of competition feature films are directed by women. And 39 of the feature films represented are directed by Bipoc filmmakers, including two indigenous filmmakers.
For the third year, the Tribeca Fest will include the “Expressions of Black Freedom” program, including a celebration of the 50th anniversary of hip-hop, which will highight the world premiere of “All Up in the Biz,” a documentary about hip-hop legend Biz Markie,...

Star Trek: Section 31 is finally happening, but not as a series (at least, not yet).
Paramount+ has ordered Section 31 as an original movie, with Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh set to reprise her role as Emperor Philippa Georgiou, a character she played in Star Trek: Discovery.
In the film, Georgiou “joins a secret division of Starfleet tasked with protecting the United Federation of Planets and faces the sins of her past.” The project will be written by Craig Sweeny and directed by Olatunde Osunsanmi, both Discovery veterans.
“I’m beyond thrilled to return to my Star Trek family and to the role I’ve loved for so long,” said Yeoh. “Section 31 has been near and dear to my heart since I began the journey of playing Philippa all the way back when this new golden age of Star Trek launched. This article contains spoilers for "Barry" season 4 episode 1. "Barry" just entered its final season, and it's going out with a bang. A lot of mysteries still loom in the air and almost every character is floating, with their every attempt to reach out to one another thwarted at every turn. Will Barry make it out of prison? Will the other shoe drop for Cousineau? Will NoHo Hank make it out of season 4 alive? So much happens in the season premiere that one suspenseful moment almost slips through the cracks. When NoHo Hank calls Barry's phone, someone else picks up. Who is it, and how do they have it?
The most natural conclusion would be that the police have it. Barry is in prison for murder, so it's only natural that a branch of the police would take possession of his phone. Barry's ex-mentor/tormentor, Fuches, strikes a deal with the...

Twins pretending to be one another isn't a foreign concept in cinema history. From Lindsay Lohan's lighthearted film The Parent Trap to Stanley Kubrick's acclaimed thriller The Shining, identical siblings have long been portrayed as inseparable for all the good and wrong reasons. However, it is unusual to see twins undergoing an identity crisis because their differences are seemingly imperceptible. David Cronenberg's 1988 classic, Dead Ringers, based on real-life brothers Cyril and Stewart Marcus has a way of overstepping the boundaries when it comes to a sibling relationship to the point that the audience becomes increasingly disturbed, but unable to unlock their eyes from the screen. This is a testament to Jeremy Irons' outstanding performance as the main duo and the gory surgical undertakings that keep the movie's story in the bizarre territory.

Editor's Note: The following contains spoilers from Season 4 Episode 4 of Succession.Succession is dominated by the messy relationship between Logan Roy (Brian Cox) and his children. The patriarch of an extremely wealthy and powerful family, his children grew up chasing after his attention and praise while he barely seemed to give them the time of day. This relationship is at the center of the show, but Kendall (Jeremy Strong), Shiv (Sarah Snook), and Roman’s (Kieran Culkin) relationship with their mother is a different story. By the time the show kicks off Caroline Collingwood (Harriet Walter) and Logan Roy have been divorced for decades. The Roy kids don’t seem particularly fond of her as she’s off living her own life, seemingly barely keeping in contact with them, but it doesn’t seem nearly as hostile as the relationship between Logan and the kids. And this is, for the most part,...

Hot on the heels of their love-it-or-hate-it niche hit "Beau Is Afraid", Ari Aster and Joaquin Phoenix are evidently ready to run it back.
According to cinematographer Pawel Pogorzelski, who has shot all three of Aster's films, the filmmaker's next movie will be "Eddington." Aster has been dropping hints about this project for the last four years, but he's been especially chatty about it during the press tour for "Beau Is Afraid." Per World of Reel, the confirmation came from Pogorzelski as he was speaking at a seminar in Nashville.
What is "Eddington?" If you've been following Aster's career since his 2018 breakout "Hereditary," you know all about it. If not, allow me to fill you in.

For as long as we can remember in the pop culture zeitgeist, books and TV have long been a healthy marriage, with the latter fueling the primetime landscape and changing it for the better. But when it comes to some book-to-screen adaptations, it’s important to retain interest through slight changes to creatively expand on the original idea in a new way, like Apple TV+’s The Last Thing He Told Me, starring Jennifer Garner and Angourie Rice, adapted from Laura Dave’s bestselling novel of the same name. While fans of the book might recognize Aisha Tyler’s fearless character Jules, the brave and helpful journalist, the award-winning actress reveals to Collider in an exclusive one-on-one interview there are some changes ahead that fans will be pleasantly surprised by.

When it comes to stylized violence with a tongue-in-cheek attitude, there is nobody like Guy Ritchie. He’s brought epic myths to the screen as well as gangland stories set against the brutal backgrounds of the rough neighborhoods of London but with glamorous storylines that belong in the most decadent sets in Hollywood. His newest film keeps violence at the fore but offers a completely different perspective and style. The most topical film of his career, The Covenant (2023) puts audiences in the middle of the Afghanistan War, following an American soldier’s desperate journey to save his Afghan translator.

Editor's Note: The following contains spoilers from Season 4 Episode 4 of Succession. Why is television is obsessed with making women pregnant? With Succession being such a modern and progressive show making headlines with every episode, nobody could have anticipated that Siobhan Roy (Sarah Snook) would become pregnant. Pregnancy in television and films always seems to exist in a perpetual state of uncertainty and form of a shocking plot device. Accompanied by Shiv's marriage now more like a business transaction pending divorce, as well as a string of conversations about procreation with Tom Wambsgans (Matthew Macfadyen) leading to the haphazard consideration of freezing her eggs and deciding later, a baby did not seem imminent.

If there was anything about "Renfield" worth getting excited for, it was Nicolas Cage playing Dracula. Though the movie sadly sucks, he's genuinely good. It's not even an out-there performance destined to be made into memes like the kind Cage has become infamous for. Cage is the only one in "Renfield" acting like he's in a horror movie and is thus the only one with a compelling screen presence. Frankly, I'd rather see a straightforward Dracula movie starring him than have him stuck in the confused schlock that is "Renfield."
Cage is the latest in a long line of silver-screen Draculas, so how does he stack up? Ranking Count Dracula performances can be difficult because different actors and storytellers interpret the character differently. Depending on the movie, he can be a hero or a villain. When the news came out that HBO had canceled Westworld after its fourth season, fans of the ambitious sci-fi series were rightfully enraged. After all, creators Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy had a pretty clear plan on how they were going to wrap things up on Season 5. Furthermore, Season 4 ended with a pretty big cliffhanger concerning a future war between humanity and hosts. Still, from a business standpoint, there were pretty good reasons to off the show: the costs were high and the audience had been dwindling ever since the end of its first run in 2016. And, to be frank, it’s not hard to understand why.

From director Castille Landon and based on the Wattpad novel by Claudia Tan, the Mma drama Perfect Addiction follows Siena Lane (Kiana Madeira), a trainer so deeply betrayed by her fighter ex-boyfriend Jax Deneris (Matthew Noszka) that she becomes laser-focused on revenge. While getting his arch-nemesis Kayden Williams (Ross Butler) ready to win, the time they spend together blurs boundaries, and the more in sync they get in the ring, the closer they also get outside of it.

When it comes to entertainment marketing, TikTok is the new “ground zero.”
That was among the views expressed by a panel of five top film and TV marketing executives held Wednesday as part of Variety’s Entertainment Marketing Summit at the One Hotel in West Hollywood.
The lively conversation, moderated by Claudia Eller, Variety’s chief production officer, touched on the challenge of working with shrinking marketing budgets, the need to create bespoke content for an array of platforms and the thrill of scoring big with earned media and word of mouth. But the discussion became the most animated when the group discussed the outsized role that TikTok now plays in spreading the word on entertainment content.
“It’s democratized the ability for anyone to have a voice. It has exploded the entire space wide open,” said Christian Parkes, chief marketing officer for Neon. “It’s a place where we...

Quite a lot of things can go wrong when a struggling ex-cop is forced to return to his home state to find a mobster's ex-girlfriend. And more things could go wrong if the home state would be "the realest goddamned place on Earth," as quoted by Donald Todd through his latest limited series on Netflix, Florida Man. Starring Édgar Ramírez as a perpetually doomed cop who cannot stay away from Florida even if he wanted to, Florida Man extends a popular meme from the 2010s to build a Florida as bizarre as one the headlines that flood internet meme pages want the audiences to believe in. It's no wonder that when a popular internet meme, which is oft inspired by real-life events, makes it to streaming, it would pose real questions about the authenticity of the events depicted.

The legacy of NBC's Friends has outlasted those of many sitcoms that graced television screens way before and after it. Decades after the emotional finale of the show for which 52.5 million viewers tuned in, the show and its characters continue to rule pop culture, thanks to the show's fandom that refuses to let the show's spark die down. Apart from the memes and pop culture references that the sitcom has fostered for years, the cultural impact of Friends has definitely been significant. From Rachel's (Jennifer Aniston) haircut to Joey's (Matt LeBlanc) pickup line, a lot of Friends has seeped into the cultural makeup of the world, reaching international audiences everywhere. But despite continuing to find some sort of relevance even today (as evidenced by 2021's Friends: The Reunion), Friends has become a demanding show to sit through, given how much of it fails to stand the test of time.

"Star Wars" is full of memorable and instantly recognizable villains. As relatable as the heroes are, it is the villains who often steal the show. Whether it's a Sith like Darth Vader or Darth Maul, or even a non-Force user like Boba Fett or Captain Phasma. When Dr. Alan Grant (Sam Neill) saw the T. rex appear out of nowhere and attack a Gallimimus, he told Tim and Lex that they’d “never look at birds the same way again.” What Jurassic Park was arguing at the time — in that hoary old age when blockbusters argued — was the relatively recent theory that theropods share a closer lineage with birds than lizards. Up until that point, the popular image of the dinosaur was largely rendered by artist Charles R. Knight, whose upright, tail-dragging Tyrannosaurus and swamp-based Brontosaurus were borrowed for The Lost World (1925) and King Kong (1933). As movie monsters, they were brought to life by Willis O’Brien, the Oscar-winning effects pioneer who invented stop-motion animation. One of his movie ideas, Emilio and Guloso, alternatively The Valley of the Mist, was completed in 1969 by his protégé Ray Harryhausen and director Jim O'Connolly as The Valley of Gwangi. Bearing...

Few genres benefit from the art form of film as much as the action genre does. More grounded, less explosive genres sometimes work just as well in novel form or as stage plays, for example, as they would in the form of a movie. Yet while there might be some good action-heavy books out there, there's an argument to be made that action just hits harder when it's visual, audible, and presented on the big screen.

After five years, the TV gods have heard fans’ prayers, and Keri Russell is finally back on our screens. The once and always Felicity Porter stars in “The Diplomat,” a political thriller hitting Netflix this week — and her first leading role in a show since the much-beloved “The Americans.”
The show is the culmination of a great first few months of 2023 for Russell. This February saw her lead the starry ensemble of “Cocaine Bear”: the bloody comedic thriller from Elizabeth Banks that launched many a meme. Set in 1984, the film gave Russell a chance to rock the kind of throwback, shoulder pad looks she wore during “The Americans”: a Cold War-set series where she played a ruthless Russian spy. Featuring queer love storylines on TV and movies nowadays has become the norm as a result of the filmmakers’ effort to mainstream the phenomenon and inform their audience that same-sex love is no different from love between a man and a woman. Fans can't help but root for them, sympathize with them, and understand that they are also people like the rest of us by offering their favorite the most adored gay love story.

The trailer for season 2 of "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" is here with glimpses of upcoming adventure and good humor from our beloved Enterprise crew. It's like a friendly greeting, a promise of lofty things to come. But while we see the showrunners waving from such great heights, we're about to bring them down now.
Sure, everything looks perfect from far away and I'm trying my best to leave it there, but there's a comedic beat that sounded pretty thin in the trailer, and the more I think about it, the more I realize that it frankly will not fly.
The "Strange New Worlds" trailer ends with James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley), the future captain of the Enterprise, getting confused by a revolving door. And when LA'an (Christina Chong) asks him, "Never seen a revolving door before?" he says, "I'm from space."
Hahahahahahahahahaha. James T. Kirk is from Iowa and we all know it.

Whenever we watch a show like Andor or Shadow and Bone, we can’t help but wonder where such outlandish stories were shot. What real life locations could possibly serve as stand-ins for amazing settings such as the planet of Aldhani or the Little Palace? How is it possible that we live in the universe as so many otherworldly places? When we watch a series that takes place in the real world, however, our curiosity isn’t as peaked. Okay, maybe we find ourselves asking questions about the actual mansions of Succession or The White Lotus, but it’s not the same. We already know that those places exist, we merely want to be able to pinpoint them on a map. And when a show like Florida Man comes along, well, everyone already knows where the episodes were shot. I mean, it’s right there in the title!

At the height of the 21st century, Richard Fleischer’s Soylent Green can make for a somewhat weird watch. Originally released in 1973, the film first produces a sense of disconnect in modern viewers with its initial card, which dates its plot as taking place in the far-off year of 2022. The film’s extremely 1970s brand of sexism and neo-Malthusian approach to overpopulation can also feel uncomfortable for contemporary eyes. And, yet, Soylent Green’s social and environmental concerns feel all the more urgent in a world in which climate change has become undeniable - though many still try - and the 1% looks for morally questionable ways to survive the imminent apocalypse. Though it hardly comes as a surprise to anyone, the film’s final reveal - “Soylent green is people!” - still packs one hell of a punch.

Few movies have been a landmark for multiple genres and changed the medium of movies like the groundbreaking, blood-soaked The Wild Bunch. The film came out at a time in which shootouts and action scenes meant throwing some thrills on the screen, but they never pushed the envelope quite like this. Hardly ever had films splattered this much blood on screen and managed to be released to a wide audience. Sure, before The Wild Bunch, you might be able to catch a grimy exploitation film in a seedy theater that boasted forbidden sights, but this was a big-time movie that carried notable stars, a big-name director, and was widely distributed by Warner Bros. Despite its reputation as a violent shoot 'em up, The Wild Bunch is honestly a more emotional movie than anything, telling the story of a group of friends that are dealing with being well past their prime.

It’s been a wild couple of years for superhero fans as Warner Bros. constantly changed its approach to movie adaptations of DC characters. There have been dozens of projects announced, canceled, and put back into the production line, to the point that following the behind-the-scenes drama became the most entertaining aspect of the Dcu. Some talented people are backing up DC movies in front and behind the cameras. But no creative mind can deliver a satisfying adaptation when the high-ups constantly change the goals of the DC cinematic universe. It’s no wonder it feels somewhat refreshing to know DC co-heads James Gunn and Peter Safran will reboot the timeline and build a cohesive storyline moving forward, reusing some of the characters and storylines of previous DC adaptations. But what about the Black Canary movie, a spinoff of Birds of Prey centered on star Jurnee Smollett-Bell? In the whirlwind of change,...

As Jonathan Majors prepares for a May 8 court appearance on domestic violence charges, his PR problems are about to get bigger.
Sources familiar with the matter tell Variety that multiple alleged abuse victims of Majors have come forward following his March arrest and are cooperating with the Manhattan district attorney’s office. The prospect of more women waiting in the wings would mark a dramatic turn in the case and comes on the heels of Majors’ publicists and management firm cutting ties with the embattled actor earlier this week.
The D.A. declined comment.
“Jonathan Majors is innocent and has not abused anyone. We have provided irrefutable evidence to the District Attorney that the charges are false. We are confident that he will be fully exonerated,” said Majors’ attorney Priya Chaudhry in a statement.

While the 1960s launched Sci-Fi television shows like Star Trek and Doctor Who that are still making waves today, the 1970s saw the genre expand and develop to include themes more relevant to their own time. While many only lasted one or two seasons, and none survived past the early 1980s, their influence can still be felt in more recent shows such as The Walking Dead. Two notable exceptions were Battlestar Galactica and The Tomorrow People, which went on to enjoy successful reincarnations.

When writer and director Ti West created and released the movie X last March, it was revealed that he had also filmed the prequel film, Pearl, at the same time, teaming up with A24 to “build a world” that revolves around the slasher genre of horror movies. The first film, which is set in 1979, follows a group of adult filmmakers as they seek out a filming location for their new film. They end up renting a guest house from an elderly couple in a remote location not unlike the Sawyer farmhouse in Texas Chain Saw Massacre. The group consists of producer Wayne (Martin Henderson), his girlfriend Maxine (Mia Goth), pornstar couple Bobby-Lynne and Jackson, filmmaker Rj (Owen Campbell) and his girlfriend and assistant, Lorraine (Jenna Ortega).

Heads up, #family! It seems "Fast X" is going Revelations on all of our asses. By that I mean the most Latino and Catholic franchise in Hollywood is ready to have Jason Momoa literally blow up the Vatican with a giant bomb that looks exactly like the Death Star.
There are franchises that pivot and change drastically halfway through, but none have done so quite successfully as "Fast & Furious." What started as a simple movie about a cop going undercover with some illegal street racers has become the only true competitor to the "Mission: Impossible" franchise in terms of bonkers plots and impossible stunts — only this one has cartoon physics (and also Ludacris).
While many Hollywood franchises are attempting to add more diversity to their cast, "Fast & Furious" has naturally had that from the start. Sure, these movies have had a lot of Latino actors over the years...

Joaquin Phoenix “just started screaming” on the set of Ari Aster’s “Beau Is Afraid” before filming one of the nightmare comedy’s most intense scenes. During a podcast interview for A24, the Oscar winner and Aster remembered filming a scene in which the eponymous Beau is taking a bath. Aster wanted to shoot the scene in one take, which got Phoenix “spinning in a panic.” The actor said it was important he felt “free” enough while filming so the scene could “reveal itself however it does when it does.”
“I’m a little reluctant to say this, because it sounds so fucking stupid and just like actor shit, but I remember… what I did before was I did the scene, but I wasn’t really volatile. I was still nervous. I was still… In some way, I was controlling a little bit. I was controlling what people thought about me.

If you’re one of the Netflix subscribers who pay $6.99 per month to watch via its Basic With Ads tier, the streamer owes you its thanks: You’re more valuable than the ad-free Standard customers who to pay $15.49 per month.

As the 20th century turned into the 21st, there was a new development in the film industry. A niche subgenre began to emerge within the horror space, a type of film that would later be categorized as "found footage." These are movies that strive to have the audience believe that they were never meant for general consumption. It was material that had been lost and was "found" and then shown to the masses for our entertainment. In 1999, The Blair Witch Project captured our imagination with its mockumentary style that landed somewhere between home movies and cinéma vérité. Along with a very effective marketing campaign, audiences genuinely couldn't decipher what was fact and what was fiction.

Little Richard — music icon, legend and the man behind hits such as “Tutti Frutti” and “Good Golly Miss Molly” — inspired a generation. But despite his success, there were points in his career where “he doesn’t feel he’s been recognized,” says filmmaker Lisa Cortés.
Her latest documentary, “Little Richard: I Am Everything,” in theaters on April 21, seeks to remind a new generation of his legacy.
Cortés says the documentary draws parallels with “All In: The Fight for Democracy” which she co-directed with Liz Garbus, in which she followed Stacy Abrams on her political campaign. Speaking with Variety, she said, “Both of these films are talking about issues that are political hot buttons. There are states where Black and queer history are under attack, and they’re passing laws against the teaching of this history. We see those are very important parts of Richard’s origin story and of rock ‘and’n’ roll.
The mythology and chronology of the "Insidious" film series can be a little difficult to follow, and might require a careful walkthrough leading into the forthcoming "Insidious: The Red Door," due in theaters on July 7, 2023.
In James Wan's 2011 original, a married couple named Josh and Renai (Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne) found their young son Dalton (Ty Simpkins) stalked by scary, supernatural forces. When Dalton falls into a coma, Josh and Renai call in a trio of paranormal investigators in the form of Elsie Rainier (Lin Shaye) and her two nerdy assistants, Specs and Tucker (screenwriter Leigh Whannell and Angus Sampson). Elsie explains that Dalton has the ability to astrally project, sending his disembodied consciousness out into the world while he sleeps. Dalton, however, unwittingly sent his mind into a purgatorial afterlife realm called The Further (the italics are part of the film's established lore). While inside, Dalton attracted the ghosts that live there,...

Jessica Chastain is sharing her autograph policy. The Oscar winner was recently captured in a viral video turning down signing a copy of Taylor Jenkins Reid’s “The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo” novel following her performance in Broadway revival of “A Doll’s House” at the Hudson Theatre, outside of which she regularly greets fans.
“I can’t sign that, just because I’m not doing it,” Chastain says to the fan in the video. The “Molly’s Game” star later took to Twitter to explain her reasoning for declining to sign books such as these.
“I’ve been asked multiple times by fans, to sign books that I’m not attached to contractually. Because it feels wrong, and like I’m taking credit for someone else’s work, I’ll say I can’t sign because I’m not doing it,” Chastain wrote. “That doesn’t mean I’ve read a bad script.

This Friday, "Evil Dead Rise" will revitalize Sam Raimi's classic horror franchise once again in a way that's familiar but completely fresh. Though the new entry trades in teenagers in mysterious cabins in the woods for a troubled family living in a high rise apartment, it maintains all the geysers of blood, gore, chainsaws, and dark humor that the series is known for. Just as Fede Álvarez did with his 2013 reboot, director Lee Cronin is taking Raimi's world back to its nastier roots by returning to the nihilistic, oppressive atmosphere that made the original 1981 "The Evil Dead" a midnight movie sensation.
After making great impressions with preview test audiences, Cronin's movie went from being an HBO Max exclusive to receiving a wide theatrical release. The hype for "Evil Dead Rise" is truly real, but when you see it this weekend, don't expect our beloved horror-himbo Ash Williams to make an appearance.

Audiences will get another chance to travel to Pandora when James Cameron's Avatar: The Way of Water returns to IMAX screens this weekend to celebrate Earth Day. The sequel to one of the highest-grossing movies of all time entered the list itself when it broke several records at the box office after years of anticipation. The development of the technology necessary for the creation of the underwater sequences and the pandemic resulted in numerous delays for the film, which was at one point hoping to debut on the big screen in 2013. Thankfully, the wait was worth it and the acclaimed filmmaker has another hit in his hands.

Bargain, Carthago, Curduroy’ among big winners.
Norwegian political satire series Power Play was named best series as the sixth annual Canneseries (April 14-19) came to a close on the Riveria.
The series from Norway’s Nrk was the last of the 10-strong competition titles to screen at the six-day event, but triumphed with the festival’s top prize in addition to the award for best music that jury member and The Police drummer Stewart Copeland called “downright revolutionary”.
Power Play is based on the true story of pro-abortion ecologist female politician Gro Harlem Brundtland’s bid to become prime minister in the 1970’s and 1980’s.

"Beau is Afraid," the new epic dark comedy from acclaimed director Ari Aster, is a surreal odyssey through the main character's inner psyche, exploring fears and traumas with the visual help of dense, elaborate set pieces. Aster labored over creating the nightmare-like world of his film, loading frames with blink-and-you'll-miss-them background details as if no corner provides any sort of relief from Beau's descent into never-ending anxiety. Aster intended this "chicken fat" -- a term coined by Mad Magazine's Will Elder to describe his comic panels' intentionally excessive background gags -- to further immerse the audience into a deeply uncomfortable, overwhelming chaos.
Oh, and they're also supposed to be funny.
Aster has a history of subtly hiding spooky visual clues and references throughout his movies. His 2018 debut feature "Hereditary" featured sinister naked Satanic cult members hanging out in the shadows and foreshadowed the film's big twists with the symbol of the demon Paimon.

One year after Los Angeles’ beloved Landmark closed, the city’s exhibition scene is looking a little brighter – or at least, it will be when a few long-awaited venues open or reopen in 2023, including the Vista, the Egyptian and the new Vidiots outpost at the Eagle Theatre.
Between grappling with the stratospherically priced L.A. commercial real estate and persuading adults to return to movie theaters, the local exhibition scene has weathered numerous challenges since Covid forced businesses to shutter operations.
“It’s better than last year for sure, because Covid is officially over May 11,” says Sony Pictures Classics co-president Tom Bernard, referencing the end of the federal public health emergency declaration. “So that is a great piece of information for people — they will probably go out more when they feel the official end to the pandemic.”
