Marc Maron wanted “Bad Education” to be more queer.
The 2019 Emmy-winning TV movie based on a true story starred Hugh Jackman as corrupt school district superintendent Frank Tassone who embezzled millions of dollars in school funds. Frank’s husband Tom was played by Stephen Spinella, while Rafael Casal portrayed his boyfriend Kyle, whose Las Vegas lifestyle was in part funded by the stolen money.
Comedian Maron revealed he auditioned to play the role of Kyle but ultimately turned it down over a lack of “gayness.”
“I thought I was auditioning for the role you had,” Maron told guest Ray Romano during his “Wtf” podcast. “I just didn’t want to do it. I read the script and I said I don’t want to do it. It was for Hugh Jackman’s boyfriend. He’s got nothing in there.”

Robin Thede ain’t here for any more Emmy snubs for the hilarious Black women from “A Black Lady Sketch Show.”
“We’re showing you the characters behind the characters,” she recently told Variety at a Q&a panel. “I love it. You see the full range of actors on the show. But I want to note that none of the show’s actors have ever been nominated for an Emmy, and they deserve it.”
Four seasons into the groundbreaking HBO series, the creative minds and strategists hope to change that.

Zack Snyder joined Anthony and Joe Russo’s “Pizza Film School” podcast and raved about HBO’s “Euphoria” and Netflix’s “Squid Game,” two shows he cited while discussing how television has become far more adventurous and exciting than film when it comes to storytelling.
“I think we’re in a real golden age of TV in the sense that TV shows are much better at showing you something that you’ve never seen before or catching you off balance or making a turn that you didn’t see coming,” Snyder said (via The Playlist). “They’re way riskier.”

After five years, the TV gods have heard fans’ prayers, and Keri Russell is finally back on our screens. The once and always Felicity Porter stars in “The Diplomat,” a political thriller hitting Netflix this week — and her first leading role in a show since the much-beloved “The Americans.”
The show is the culmination of a great first few months of 2023 for Russell. This February saw her lead the starry ensemble of “Cocaine Bear”: the bloody comedic thriller from Elizabeth Banks that launched many a meme. Set in 1984, the film gave Russell a chance to rock the kind of throwback, shoulder pad looks she wore during “The Americans”: a Cold War-set series where she played a ruthless Russian spy. It also gave her the chance to reunite with her co-stars from the show, including Margo Martindale and her real-life partner Matthew Rhys, just in time for the 10 year...

Abbott Elementary‘s second outing is coming to a close, but Mr. Johnson (William Stanford Davis) has much more to say about the show and his co-stars. TV Insider caught up with Davis, who answered our classroom superlatives about who on the show is the biggest teacher’s pet, best dressed, class clown, and more (and some of his answers may shock you.) In the footage above, Davis immediately calls out Jacob (played by Chris Perfetti) as the show’s teacher’s pet. Although it took him a bit of time to come up with someone, he picked Barbera (Sheryl Lee Ralph) as the biggest class clown. When asked about who is most likely to succeed, he slipped and said Tyler [James Gregory] before correcting himself to say the character Gregory Eddie, but he’s probably correct in his original assessment of the answer. Although he joked and said Mr.

As Jonathan Majors prepares for a May 8 court appearance on domestic violence charges, his PR problems are about to get bigger.
Sources familiar with the matter tell Variety that multiple alleged abuse victims of Majors have come forward following his March arrest and are cooperating with the Manhattan district attorney’s office. The prospect of more women waiting in the wings would mark a dramatic turn in the case and comes on the heels of Majors’ publicists and management firm cutting ties with the embattled actor earlier this week.
The D.A. declined comment.

Well, apparently not everyone knows Raymond.

Romano continued, “I can buy that, that Martin Scorsese doesn’t watch television.

Spoiler Alert: This story discusses major plot points in the Season 3 finale of “The Mandalorian,” currently streaming on Disney+.
It took all eight episodes of Season 3 for “The Mandalorian” to find its way back to itself, which is to say, back to Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and his (now officially!) adopted child, Grogu. For most of Season 3, the core relationship of the series — the reason why “The Mandalorian” became an instant global phenomenon — was shunted aside in favor of tracking how Katee Sackhoff’s Bo-Katan Kryze rallied the estranged factions of Mandalorians to take back their devastated homeworld.
Audiences have not responded kindly.

If you’re one of the Netflix subscribers who pay $6.99 per month to watch via its Basic With Ads tier, the streamer owes you its thanks: You’re more valuable than the ad-free Standard customers who to pay $15.49 per month.
According to Netflix’s first-quarter earnings report, “Basic with Ads” in the U.S. now brings in more overall revenue per user than the company’s Standard plan. Do the math, and that tells us advertising contributes at least $8.50 in revenue per (U.S.) user to Netflix. (A report in Bloomberg last month put the number of ad-tier subscribers at 1 million.)
As CFO Spencer Neumann said during the senior team’s Q1 earnings interview, “Overall we’re pleased with our per-member ad-plan economics. We really like the path we’re on.”

Cannes — News of the death of Mip-tv looked greatly exaggerated if the 2023 edition, which played out over April 17-19 in Cannes, was anything to go by, with Lucy Smith, director of MipTV and Mipcom, Cannes two TV trade fairs, announcing final figures of 5,560 participants, including 5,510 on-site delegates.
That said, attendance was sizeably down on pre-pandemic levels – 9,500 attendees in 2019 – with major European drama sales companies literally counting the cost of attendance and exhibition space versus Mip-driven sales. HBO’s hitman comedy Barry features murders for hire, bloody mob massacres and plenty of intense psychological drama. A real laugh riot, right?
The presence of SNL alum Bill Hader as the titular killer may lead viewers to expect something lighter and goofier than what Barry actually is, but the show has defied those expectations from the start, spinning a tale that balances comedy and drama while getting darker and darker each season. With Barry ending its run this year after four seasons, TVLine decided to ask Hader and his co-stars: Can we even call this show a comedy anymore?...

Just as “Harry Potter” will get a TV remake and “The Hunger Games” will see a prequel, all the old YA franchises from the late aughts are suddenly new again. Now, the most (in)famous book series from that period may soon follow, with “Twilight.”
Sources confirmed to IndieWire that Lionsgate TV is in early development on a show based on “The Twilight Saga,” Stephenie Meyer’s four-book series about the romance between clumsy high schooler Bella and sadboi emo vampire Edward. It’s early days with no network or streamer attached to the the project, which would be the second adaptation after the film series that began in 2008 starring Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson.
Meyer is expected to be involved in some capacity, and Wyck Godfrey and Erik Feig will executive produce. Sinead Daly is attached to write the show, which may be a full remake or an offshot of the original story.

Let no one deny it: Rupert Murdoch is clever like a fox. He’s slyer than his adversaries in mainstream media. They still think in real-world terms. But Murdoch thinks in terms of the world that he’s created — the world of fake news, of lies that play because they carry the ring of vengeful mythology (life as a Charles Bronson film that never ends). The world that Fox News pretends is reality.
You could make a case that in recent weeks, Murdoch’s circus of happy-talk dystopian propaganda (otherwise known as any random half hour of Fox News) took a major hit.

Send Belinda back to the White Lotus. After Jennifer Coolidge‘s Season 2 reprisal of Tanya McQuoid, Natasha Rothwell will follow suit in The White Lotus Season 3, reprising her role as White Lotus employee Belinda Lindsey, according to Variety. Belinda was closely connected to Tanya throughout the HBO drama’s Emmy-winning first season. The exorbitantly wealthy heiress had traveled to the Hawaiian White Lotus to spread her mother’s ashes. While there, she became emotionally dependent on Rothwell’s spa manager, going so far as to offer to fund Belinda’s dream business venture — a wellness spa of her own. By the end of the season, Tanya had gotten so wrapped up in her own life (and her budding romance with Jon Gries‘ Greg — that was a bust) that she pulled the promised funding, breaking Belinda’s heart in the process. Kepnes is the writer-creator behind the four-book “You” series, following the exploits of magnetic serial killer Joe Goldberg. A fifth and final season of the series was just greenlit.
Kepnes, a native of Cape Cod, will next release “For You and Only You” on April 25 from Random House.
Kepnes is the writer-creator behind the four-book “You” series, following the exploits of magnetic serial killer Joe Goldberg. Her novels are the source material for the Netflix scripted juggernaut “You,” adapted by Greg Berlanti and Sera Gamble. The series reinvigorated the career of Penn Badgley in the lead role of Goldberg, and has proven a massive performer on the streaming platform. A fifth and final season of the series was just greenlit.

“Bella, where the hell have you been, Loca?” That’s what Lionsgate seems to be asking as a new Twilight Saga TV series is reportedly in the works with Lionsgate Television. According to The Hollywood Reporter, a series version of Stephenie Meyer’s bestselling books series is in early development. The news comes shortly after the announcement of Max’s forthcoming Harry Potter series. The Twilight TV series is currently in its infancy and isn’t attached to a network or streaming platform, but the studio, which controls the rights to the franchise plans to lead development before shopping rights to the package. There is not currently a timeline for when the show will be taken out to buyers. Sinead Daly has been tapped to write the project that could either be a remake or offshoot of the book series. This time, however, she plays an ass-kicking investigator with a mysterious past as well as taking on an executive producer role on the project. “I like scheduling and budgets and all that,” she tells Variety in Cannes, where Gellar is in town...

If there’s one thing we’ve come to expect from 9-1-1 over the years, it’s a wild finale with some sort of major emergency that likely puts one of the first responders in danger. And it sounds like that will once again be true this spring. The Fox drama ends its sixth season on Monday, May 15, and after getting some teases from Kenneth Choi while talking to him about the latest episode that felt like a sequel to “Chimney Begins” in a way, we can’t help but wonder how this one will stack up to past finales that have included things like bombs, a train crash, and a sniper. Choi previews what’s still to come in Season 6, as well as a decision that will need to be made by Chimney and Maddie (Jennifer Love Hewitt). What’s coming up for Chimney? What can you say...

If Season 1 of “Schmigadoon!” needed to nail the candy-colored vibes of an MGM musical, Season 2 does the same dance — but backwards and in heels and probably stockings with a run or two. The second season of the Apple TV+ series set an equally ambitious production task for itself by turning to the messier, sharp-elbowed, darkly funny musicals of the ’70s.
The cast had to contend with the compositional whiplash of Kander and Ebb and Sondheim (to say nothing of Aaron Tveit’s hippie commune). But production designer Jamie Walker McCall’s brief was to create a musical version of Chicago – canonically, a Schmicago – that would look as grimy and gross as a Kristin Chenoweth-run orphanage that also still reflected the fun and theatricality of the series. As McCall conceptualized the show’s Schmicago, she looked beyond the “Cabaret,” “Chicago,” and “Sweeney Todd” references embedded in the script to something more surprising: “Mary Poppins.

Goodbye, Tanya — Belinda’s back!
Natasha Rothwell will return to “The White Lotus” for Season 3, Variety has learned from multiple sources close to the production.
Rothwell was a fan favorite in Season 1 as spa manager Belinda Lindsey, who was strung along by wealthy resort guest Tanya McQuoid (Jennifer Coolidge) with promises of an investment to open her own practice. Plot and character details remain under wraps for the new season, but creator Mike White teased after the Season 2 finale that he envisions “a satirical and funny look at death and Eastern religion and spirituality” — potentially aligning with Belinda’s wellness background.

A “Twilight” TV series adaptation is in very early development at Lionsgate TV, Variety has confirmed with sources.
The series would be based on the Stephanie Meyers book series of the same name, which was previously adapted into a film franchise. At this time, there is no writer or a network/streaming service attached to the project.
According to sources, Wyck Godfrey and Erik Feig are attached as executive producers. Feig is the former co-president of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, while Godfrey and his Temple Hill production company produced the five “Twilight” films. Just like with the first season, there is so much to love about what’s coming up on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. Paramount+ has released the teaser trailer for Season 2, which will premiere on Thursday, June 15, and it offers a look at the new adventures and explorations to come for Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) and the rest of the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise. Joining them this season is Paul Wesley as James T. Kirk — and after he and La’an (Christina Chong) meet, Una (Rebecca Romijn) remarks, “You have an energy… It’s making me sweat.” La’an is also the one there later when Kirk struggles with a revolving door in a store. “I’m from space,” he offers as an explanation. Plus, see Spock (Ethan Peck) in the captain’s chair, and as Ortegas (Melissa ...

Firing military-grade weaponry and walking away from explosions in slow motion is a family business, apparently, on Netflix’s Fubar.
Action movie legend Arnold Schwarzenegger takes on his first major TV role in the new action comedy, which debuts on the streamer on Thursday, May 25. It’s time for him to hang it up, though, and he plans to spend his retirement reconnecting with his daughter, played by Top Gun: Maverick‘s Monica Barbaro. But the...

The trailer for Netflix‘s Fubar, Arnold Schwarzenegger’s first television project, has debuted its official trailer ahead of its May 25 premiere on the streaming service. The teaser above shows what we can expect from the 8-episode action comedy series, including Schwarzenegger being a badass. “You are the fastest 65-year-old white guy on the planet,” Milan Carter says as Arnie’s guy in the chair. We then see him ride off on a motorcycle, evoking imagery of his time as The Terminator. Schwarzenegger plays a former CIA agent who plans to get his ex-wife of 15 years back now that he’s retired. That’s until he’s dragged back into the fray by his organization when an operative goes missing. That’s when things get interesting. There’s a family twist… “When a father and daughter learn that they’ve each secretly been working as CIA Operatives for years, they...

Turns out sometimes the true undiscovered country is a revolving door.
At least it is to Capt. Kirk (Paul Wesley), who has some difficulty with one in a funny moment in the “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” Season 2 teaser, which also features normal Klingons!
Yes, the monstrous Klingons of “Star Trek: Discovery,” redesigned via additional, far more extravagant prostheses to create a truly terrifying effect, unlike anything we had seen of the warrior alien race on 50 years of previous “Trek,” seem to have been abandoned, if this Season 2 teaser is to be taken at face value. Perhaps the reappearance of Michael Dorn’s Worf on “Star Trek: Picard,” looking as he always did, other than white hair to make him look even cooler, inspired a return to the classic design.
In fact, the Season 2 teaser of “Strange New Worlds” is overflowing with moments to make fans smile, including Spock (Ethan Peck...

Say it ain’t so, Schmoopie! After 10 seasons and 229 side-busting episodes, we’re saying goodbye to ABC’s ’80s-based sitcom The Goldbergs. Based on the life of series creator Adam F. Goldberg, the comedy explored the gnarliest decade via big-loving mom Beverly (Wendi McLendon-Covey), bombastic father Murray (Jeff Garlin) and their three children: aspiring singer Erica (Hayley Orrantia), wired Barry (Troy Gentile) and video camera–toting Adam (Sean Giambrone) — as well as Beverly’s rascally father Albert “Pops” Solomon (George Segal). “Adam always had a very specific vision, and he really established just a great template for a family comedy,” says executive producer Alex Barnow. That included Goldberg’s real home video footage at the end of most episodes. Time travel to 1980-something — a phrase heard in each episode after the pilot — and relive this most excellent sitcom.
