Liberals gain control of the Wisconsin state Supreme Court for the first time in 15 years by hoosakiwi in news

[–]hoosakiwi[S] 9595 points9596 points  (0 children)

This was a very important race, with both parties spending several million dollars promoting their candidate. I think the total spent is in excess of $45million, which is unheard of for a state Supreme Court race.

So why does it matter so much?

Wisconsin is a swing state and the court will be ruling on voting rights and abortion rights in the coming years. With liberals now having the majority, it's likely (though not guaranteed) that these rights will be upheld or expanded under the court instead of restricted.

It's great that turnout was so high in such a consequential state race...though I personally am not a fan of elected judges.

Edit: Looks like WI Senate District 8 is going to be won by the Republican candidate. This is worrisome because it will give Republicans a super-majority in the state legislature which means they can impeach WI Supreme Court Justices and the Dem Governor. Hard to tell if they will take such an extreme action, but it is worth noting that they will have the power to do it.

I don't think they would. Just look at what happened to John Edwards.

Maybe, maybe, you could argue this if it was already the Democratic nominee for the 2024 presidential race. But Dems would happily ditch any former politician or politician who is running for the nomination but hasn't yet secured it. Regarding the latter, they would see an indictment as a huge weakness and wouldn't want that candidate to continue.

Just imagine for a second if Obama or Hillary or Biden had been charged with 34 counts of falsifying business records in order to influence an election they won. Republicans would be screaming from the rooftops about it.

But no, it's their guy, so they excuse it by calling it a "political witch hunt".

For all their screaming about Hillary and Hunter Biden, it sure seems like the scandal they are really looking for is right in their own party.

Donald Trump formally arrested after arriving at New York courthouse by hoosakiwi in news

[–]hoosakiwi[S] 18.6k points18.6k points  (0 children)

Update: Trump has pleaded "not guilty" to 34 first degree counts of falsifying business records. The charges involve two different women.

Update 2: The charges include a conspiracy charge. There is no conspiracy charge. This was misreporting from NBC while the hearing was happening.

The judge ruled last night that there won't be any news cameras allowed in the court room during the actual hearing. A select few still photographers can be in the room until the hearing starts to take photos and then they have to leave.

Meanwhile reporters will be allowed in the room, but cannot use their phones or laptops. So we'll have to wait until the hearing ends to know what happened.

Donald Trump indicted over hush money payments in Stormy Daniels probe by rahal1996 in news

[–]hoosakiwi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not the hush money that’s illegal, it’s the creative accounting that he used to try and not use his own money for the hush payments. For example, it’s alleged that he used campaign funds to pay off Stormy Daniels and then intentionally misreported it on various forms and taxes, etc in order to write it off as a campaign/business expense.

If he had just paid her off with his own money and reported it out correctly, it prob wouldn’t be an issue at all.

Reporting says there are 34 charges, so my guess is that he did this for multiple payments to multiple people which proves a pattern.

That's what people suspect, but the indictment is sealed, so no one actually will know until they unseal it. It's all speculation until then.

A source told The Independent that grand jurors voted to indict the ex-president on Thursday, and that indictment is currently under seal. It will be unveiled at some point in the near future by District Attorney Alvin Bragg.

Now I want to know what the charges are.

U.S. journalist detained in Russia on espionage charges by tomorrow509 in news

[–]hoosakiwi 149 points150 points  (0 children)

Not a lot of details in the article, but it’s pretty clear the guy is a legitimate journalist who has covered the region extensively.

The FSB accused Gershkovich of collecting “information constituting a state secret about the activities of one of the enterprises of the Russian military-industrial complex.” It provided no evidence.

Gershkovich is a journalist covering Russia, Ukraine and the former Soviet Union.

He was previously a reporter for Agence France-Presse and the Moscow Times and a news assistant at the New York Times, according to his author page on The Wall Street Journal’s website.

Seems like a ploy by Russia to secure another human pawn that they can use in negotiations with the United States.

We should expect more of this…

This is good feedback and something the team and I can at least discuss. I'll raise it.

FWIW I agree with you. That's why I asked in an earlier comment about what people want to see more and less of (specifically) so we can try and adjust our rules to help with it.

That said, there is only so much we - as mods - can do. A lot of non e-sports stuff does get submitted, but not upvoted. Users have to be active in the new queue upvoting and downvoting the content they want to see. And there needs to be people creating that content who aren't just spamming.

I'd like to give you the benefit of the doubt that you are choosing "creature" because the person is a mass murderer and not because they are trans.

So I'm going to give you fair warning that if you continue to use "it" or "creature" as the pronouns, you will be banned because we will start to interpret it as hate speech towards trans folks.

You can find a more civil way to discuss your thoughts and opinions on this matter.
