Hi, I'm exploring options for making a DSL language and/or toolkit that would output code that can be used in the Max/MSP plugin system, which supports C or C++. Max is a visual programming language for music that one can extend by writing new objects (called "externals in Max land) in C or C++. I am the author of Scheme for Max, a system that embeds a Scheme interpreter in Max. I would like to also make a higher level language tool for adding new C code so that the C side of Max extensions can be created in a less cumbersome way - their SDK is very low level, with a lot of boilerplate that ought to be possible to abstract away.

My questions:

Is OCaml a good language for doing this? (I'm here because a) I want to learn an ML langauge, and b) I read that the Haxe compiler was in Ocaml)

Can anyone point me at good resources for this kind of thing? Books, websites, etc.
