This will be Joel Embiid’s 14th missed game of the season. Just one player in NBA history has missed 12+ games and still won the MVP award that season - Bill Walton in 1977-78, who missed 24 games.

Crazy to think we might see someone win MVP while missing nearly a fifth of the season. When Bill Walton won the MVP award in 1978, his team had the best record in the league, which contributed to why he won. This would definitely be a precedent setter in terms of how much availability actually matters for the award.

Can someone please explain this considering that the Lakers don't really drive in the paint as much as other teams according to NBA.com. Note this stretch is also without Lebron James for most the games.

Article

At last month’s trade deadline, the Nets reportedly said no thanks to four first-round picks for Mikal Bridges, and the Raptors refused three for OG Anunoby. The landscape of NBA trades has shifted dramatically in recent years. Two firsts don’t get you as much as they used to.
