A bit of background...
The film follows Alek, an aimless, 30-year-old Type 1 diabetic. After returning home in the hopes of reliving his teenage “glory days,” he finds that most of his friends have moved away or moved on within the dull comforts of suburban life. Only Matt, one of Alek’s old acquaintances, is free to spend the night. Tensions quickly mount as Matt represents everything Alek hates about suburban life and Alek seems unwilling and unable to let go of his rose-tinted dreams of the past. Things go from bad to worse as the night goes on, and Alek’s dream turns into a nightmare.
I was in production for a documentary that got shut down during COVID. So I decided to get a few people together to produce a script I had written a while before that seemed feasible with the resources we had access to and while we were all out of work. We shot the film over 14 days on old HI-8 cameras and then transferred the film to 16mm. It's incredibly lo-fi, but, recently in my career, I've been trying to find and explore the aesthetics of disability cinema. As a disabled filmmaker, I wanted to make a film that felt uniquely disabled... that used technology that was itself disabled, discarded, and forgotten. I also felt a home-video aesthetic made absolute sense for this main character who is so desperate and nostalgic for a time that was free of responsibility.
We are proud of this weird little movie. It takes a bit of effort on the audience's part... because it is EXTREMELY lo-fi, even in lo-fi terms. And the main character can be extremely awful and selfish. Regardless, I hope you enjoy it. We had a blast making it and have loved sharing it with others.
