Livingston, Staten Island

Livingston is a name sometimes applied to the northeastern portion of West Brighton, a neighborhood located on the North Shore of the New York City borough of Staten Island.

Geography

While official boundaries do not exist for any designated places on Staten Island, Livingston is most commonly regarded as being enclosed by Bement Avenue on the west, the Kill Van Kull shoreline on the north, Henderson Avenue on the south, and the Snug Harbor Cultural Center on the east. It is dominated by large, older homes built before 1900, and its streets are shaded by spreading oak and elm trees.

History

One of the first Europeans to settle the area was Francis Lovelace, the second governor of the New York colony, who in 1668 started farming in the area that would become Livingston. The original name for the district was Elliotville, after a renowned ophthalmologist, Samuel MacKenzie Elliot, who by 1840 had acquired more than 30 homes in the community. The present name of Livingston was coined by officials of the Staten Island Railway who bought the mansion of resident Anson Livingston and then gave that name to a station built near the current intersection of Richmond Terrace and Bard Avenue. This station was situated on the now-defunct North Shore branch of the railway, on which passenger service ceased in 1953; the tracks on this branch are still there, but all traces of the Livingston station have been removed, as is the case with the two other former stations on either side (Sailors' Snug Harbor and West Brighton).

Livingston, Wisconsin

Livingston is a village in Grant and Iowa Counties in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 664 at the 2010 census. Of this, 657 were in Grant County, and only 7 were in Iowa County.

The Iowa County portion of Livingston is part of the Madison Metropolitan Statistical Area, while the Grant County portion is part of the Platteville Micropolitan Statistical Area.

History

A post office called Livingston has been in operation since 1880. The village was named for Hugh Livingston, the original owner of the town site.

A meteorite fell to the Earth near and in the village on April 14, 2010, following a spectacular bolide and aerial explosion seen over much of the midwestern United States.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.02 square miles (2.64 km²), all of it land.

2010 census

As of the census of 2010, there were 664 people, 263 households, and 175 families residing in the village. The population density was 651.0 inhabitants per square mile (251.4/km²). There were 277 housing units at an average density of 271.6 per square mile (104.9/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 99.7% White, 0.2% African American, and 0.2% from two or more races.

Livingston, Alabama

Livingston is a city in Sumter County, Alabama, United States. At the 2000 census the population was 3,297. The city is the county seat of Sumter County. It was named in honor of Edward Livingston, of the Livingston family of New York.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 7.2 square miles (19 km²), of which 7.1 square miles (18 km²) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.26 km²) (1.11%) is water.

As of the 2010 United States Census, there were 3,485 people residing in the city. 63.9% were African American, 34.6% White, 0.1% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.4% from some other race and 0.7% of two more races. 0.7% were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

As of the census of 2000, there were 3,297 people, 1,368 households, and 731 families residing in the city. The population density was 463.1 people per square mile (178.8/km²). There were 1,586 housing units at an average density of 222.8 per square mile (86.0/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 60.78% Black or African American, 37.82% White or Caucasian, 0.18% Asian, 0.15% Native American, 0.30% from other races, and 0.76% from two or more races. 1.43% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
