William Reid Stakes Form Indicators and Field

We'll have key details on the William Reid Stakes 2024 form indicators and field once it is released on the Wednesday before the race.

The William Reid Stakes is the last of four Group One sprint races in Melbourne over the Autumn racing carnival. Step-ups in distance occur across the Black Caviar Lightning (1000 metres) at Flemington, the Oakleigh Plate (1100 metres) at Caulfield and the Newmarket Handicap (1200 metres) at Flemington.

The William Reid Stakes is typically run two weeks after the Newmarket. This makes for a gruelling schedule should any horse attempt all four races, which are generally held over five weeks. Few do, however many William Reid entrants will have run in a combination of these races over the preceding weeks.

When doing the form for the William Reid Stakes – as with all races at Moonee Valley – it’s critical to consider the track. The cramped, tight-turning Valley course is nothing at all like the wide-open spaces of Flemington, or even Caulfield.

The 1200m start at Moonee Valley is at the stop of the back straight, with the course featuring three short, straight sprints and two sharp turns. Gate speed is important, as is the barrier draw – recent history shows that most winners come from the inside barrier, with barrier one providing the most.
